Quote:
Public Enemies is a 2009 film adaptation of Bryan Burrough's book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34 directed by Michael Mann. The crime drama is set during The Great Depression with the focus on the FBI agent Melvin Purvis' attempt to stop criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd. Christian Bale will play FBI agent Purvis, Johnny Depp will play Dillinger, and Marion Cotillard will play Dillinger's girlfriend Billie Frechette.

Principal photography began in Columbus, Wisconsin on March 17, 2008 and wrapped in Chicago, Illinois, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and several other places in Wisconsin the end of June 2008, including the famous Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, the actual location of a 1934 gun fight between Dillinger and the FBI.

Some parts of the film were shot in Crown Point, Indiana, the town where Dillinger was imprisoned and subsequently escaped from jail.

Those two pics is everything there is yet. But I guess the trailer will be released soon.

I could care less how the real guy looked like as long as the movie is good.

Rather have a good actor that doesn't look like him than some shitty one that does. Wink

Since when do actors get cast based on their resemblance to the real-life character they're playing? Martin Sheen didn't look one bit like Kennedy but did a decent job of playing him. Not so in the case of the Aviator. The actor who, in my opinion, most resembles Howard Hughes would be George Clooney but we got that midget from Titanic. Razz

They do when their resemblance is of a significant enough importance.

Or when the rememberance of them is still quite fresh(who remembers the face of a 1930's gangster). Boris Jeltsin would probably not be played by Johnny Depp.

I want the character to be complete. Which means that if he was a balding shorty with bad teeth that's how the actor should look onscreen, and his character should behave accordingly (have or not have some pyschological trouble about his appearance, go extra violent or smthg like that).
It's pretty obvious that Depp and Bale get picked up for their roles only due to popularity and pretty boy-ness. This is actually the decline of cinema. Next step is Orlando Bloom playing Rossevelt or Pitt playing Hitler.

Eh, what if the character didn't have any trouble with his appearance? It's not too far off. The guy is dark haired. No horn in the forehead or 3rd eye.

Vodka has a point and these actors are being chosen just because they look pretty in period clothing. But that should be no surprise to anyone because hollywood is not the place to be looking for any depth or authenticity.

I honestly can't see the problem. Some of the top acting talent is in this flick. Why settle for less because his chin is more pronounced than how the twat actually looked like?

Honestly I can't see any acting talent in Bale. I mean, he's awesome as Patrick Bateman and Bruce Wayne but even in The Illusionist - is there really any ACTING involved? He always has this stone-cold face, in every movie. No emotions, no facial expressions. We love him for this coldness, womenz love him as a sexy boy but frankly speaking - he's not an amazing _actor_.

He was in The Prestige, not The Illusionist, and he was great in it. I have yet to see him in a movie where he disappoints as an actor.

Yeah, The Prestige, sorry Smile Anyway acting = spectre of emotions and different characters. Not the same shit over and over again. Even Michael Caine provided more acting than Bale in Prestige.

Right, let's stop it. There's no use arguing with people who think good looks and the same fierce look in the eyes (in every movie) is acting. Rolling Eyes

Bale has been fortunate/smart enough to choose roles that suit the narrow range of emotions that he can display. Watch him in Harsh Times and see how he struggles while experimenting with a fake accent.

Yeah, because the measure of a great actor is how convincingly they can fake an accent. I don't think you can simply be fortunate enough to play so many roles which suit your acting style.

Why is it so difficult to give credit where credit is due? Seems like the your negative bias is unrelated to his acting.

Funny that you two whine about Bale and not Dorff. Rolling Eyes

I agree, Im not a Bale fan either. Didnt care for American Psycho to much, the batman movies ive gotten used to and arent bad, but other than that, dont like him/his acting.

Still, im gunna see the new terminator and him as John Connor. If he's good in that, then i may change my opinion. But i have a feeling he's gunna suck as leader of the human race....

Well, he ain't gonna suck but his performance won't be much different from the one in Reign of Fire, I guess. SSDD.

What accent might that be? The dude is welsh. He doesn't sound welsh in BB or TDK.

From what I remember his accent in The Prestige is profoundly more english than welsh as well, not to mention 3:10 to Yuma.

Christian Bale is a great actor, one of my favourite actors nowadays.

Specially after watching American Psycho. What a great movie.

It´ll be interesting to see him and Depp in the same movie.

Will keep an eye on this one...

I think he's a good actor as well and he was brilliant in American Psycho, Equilibrium and The Machinist so nuff said about that. And he will be brilliant in T4 and this movie here but that's because he's good at portraying those kinds of angry/disturbed characters. But just like 'action-heroes' such as Arnold and Stallone couldn't do comedy, Bale has his limitations as well. Nuff said about that too.

Funny thing is that in real life he probably looks and behaves exactly like his chars. Speaking about obsessive/psychotic behavior - remember his arrest for violence? So really no acting there Smile
