- Genre: Turn Based Strategy RPG
- Release date: August 26th 2008
- Story:
Quote: |
The game takes place in a Netherworld School called the Maritsu Evil Academy. In this demon school, a good student is one who engages in delinquent activities such as ditching classes, or not doing homework. The student who participates the most in these kind of activities is known as the Honor Student, while demons who arrive to class early and do their homework are known as delinquents. Mao, son of the chairman, has not once attended class since the beginning of school and is known as the honor-student of Maritsu Evil Academy. His ambition for the future is to overthrow his father, who also happens to be an Overlord, and take his title for himself. After reading a few volumes in his manga, Mao comes to the conclusion that "heroes are the ones who defeat devils". From that point on, Mao resolved to become a hero himself, convinced it will help him achieve his goal.
Eventually, Raspberyl, the delinquent of the school, learns about Mao's goal and begins to worry. If Mao were to achieve the title of Hero, then it would endanger her position as the school's "Number One Delinquent". She makes up her mind to follow Mao, stop his plan, and once again secure her title. However since Raspberyl is a demon delinquent, she tries to solve the problem without violence and talk him out of it instead. Seeing this from a distance, Almaz, a hero himself, misunderstands the situation and tries to save the day. Mao accepts the challenge and defeats him, stealing Almaz's title in the process. With the title of Hero, Mao believes he is one step closer to defeating his father and achieving his goal of becoming an Overlord.

I absolutely love Disgaea and can't wait to get my hands on Disgaea 3!
Preordered the US version and my copy should arrive in a day or two, wooohooo!
You can have so much fun with the disgaea games, it's incredible. Level to level 9999, random dungeons, an insane amount of items to collect, etc etc etc, and the humor is great as well.
Then you also got bonus characters around from previous games and the japanese version even got a few extra bonus characters as downloadable content.
Definitely not a mainstream game, but for me, it's one of the two reasons I had for buying a PS3 (metal gear solid 4 beeing the other one)

Disgeae games are great. I was thinking about importing this game too from the States. The only thing putting me off is the DLC though. Not sure whether to wait for a Europe release seeing how the PSN store is so picky about regions etc..

well you can make US PSN accounts on a european ps3 and access the US PSN store, so it should be possible to get DLC from there?
Anyway, a european release hasn't even been confirmed yet, so it might never even get to europe.
I'm taking my chances with the US version.. thank god for no region lock on ps3 games.

One of the few games that could make me buy a PS3, guess it won't be too long until I can't resist anymore.
edit: where do you guys buy your PS3 import versions?

No, DLC is region locked. IIRC with CoD4 it was even between different countries in Europe, meaning that if you had a british version, you couldn't get the new maps in Germany...

I don't usually buy import games, made an exception for this and bought it at the official NIS store, which recently started shipping to europe http://www.rosenqueen.com/

but shouldn't you be able to get the maps with a british PSN accounts if you have the british version of the game?
In fact, I just looked around a bit about this and found
Quote: | Just make sure that you buy your DLC from the PSN region that the game was bought in. So for instance, COD4 was bought from the USA, make sure to buy your DLC from the US PSN.
It's pretty much the same for every game. I also made the same mistake with buying DLC from the US Store for my AU copy of Guitar Hero 3. |
which appears to confirm my theory

Yeah, but can you buy from these stores using a British credit card for example?
As for the game, I've never played this series before so it all looks a bit mad, and Japanese. I also think they could have done a lot more with the presentation to make it more appealing to newcomers (assuming the 'game' underneath is compelling enough for existing fans - as this thread, and the existence of the game itself, might suggest). Is there a demo on the US/Jap stores?

I'll try to buy something later on the US PSN and will let you know.
My copy of Disgaea 3 is gonna be here in a few hours btw, and I'll let you guys know how it is, from a perspective of someone who liked:
La Pucelle Tactics
Disgaea 1
Disgaea 2
Phantom Brave
Makai Kingdom
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters
if anyone played one of those games and liked it, he should go out and get all the others too, because they're very similar and awesome stuff :P

Cool do that please Surray. What Ispep said about the cards is exactly what I am thinking. If it is indeed possible to use a British visa card on the US PSN store i'll pick up a copy next week.
I have a PAL Soulcalibur game and bought the DLC from from the Japan PSN store using my girlfriends card a few weeks back without knowing any better only to have wasted my money.
@Ispep theres no demo out unfortunately.

Alright! I played it for 4 hours or so now, and it's great!
The combat is pretty much more of the same with some minor changes/enhancements.
Like.. you can now attack when you got several characters on top of each other (they will all attack together then)
You can also make characters jump on top of a character-tower which is kinda funny
There are also the new geo-blocks in addition to the good old geo panels which spice things up quite a bit. Basically just another puzzle element that you can use to your advantage. They're colored blocks that have status effects that effect everyone who stands on them, and you can either destroy them individually, or throw a block of a color next to another block of the same color, and there will be a chain reaction that destroys all connected blocks of that color. (filling up your bonus gauge in the process)
You can also transform monsters to weapons for characters then they'll get special moves based on what monster you transformed and he attack power depends on the stats of the monster.
The dark assembly is back but it's now some school council thingy, but it works the same way as in disgaea 1 and 2, and you can get items similar to the phones from disgaea 2 again that let you influence a certain race to vote for you in the next vote.
What I really like is the new skill system. Basically every class has a special skill that's unique to that class (called evility or something) and you can learn more using Mana, but you can never have more than 2 equipped, but they're very powerful.
Then you got the normal weapon skills and spells again, but they're no longer learned automatically. So you don't get Blade Rush and Hurricane Slash by using a sword a lot and leveling up your sword skill. All you gotta do is get some mana, then you can go and buy the skill you want directly. Leveling up the skill also takes mana and you get a preview of what the next level will get you... like.. attack power goes from 105% to 110% and SP usage goes from 4 to 5.
It works really well and gives you more control and less grinding.
There's obviously also all kinds of small other enhancements throughout the game.
I like the story and the characters too. Mao (main character) isn't Laharl but he's good enough, and there's lots of hilarious dialogue as always.
You can again choose between english and japanese voiceovers btw!

nice one Surray. I'll probably buy this on import now too if it's not going to be released here in Europe any time soon.. Did you try buying the DLC from the US store with a British card?.

Yeah I tried that (although with an austrian card) and it's not possible, because when it asks you for the credit card information it, the country of the card owner is locked to what you set when you created the PSN account.
However! In the US you can also use PSN Cards which are kinda like MMO Gametime cards.
You buy em for cash in some shop and can then input a code that is on the card to get it on your PSN account as balance.
These cards are also available on eBay. They are kinda expensive at the moment (27$ for a 20$ card for example, although the weak USD makes them not so expensive again), but I think that is because they are currently kinda rare and not available in too many stores. According to wikipedia however, they should become available in several more stores this month (september):
Quote: | The cards have been limited to Meijer stores and select military bases. Also, due sometime in September, PlayStation Network Cards will be available at Blockbuster, Rite-Aid, and 7-Eleven stores across the country. |
So I expect the prices to drop soon, and when you can buy from the US store, using the US version of Disgaea 3, everything should be perfectly fine!
btw, I thought this is pretty funny:
1up Review says:
Quote: | This is possibly the most accessible incarnation to date, and if you've overlooked Disgaea until now, give this one a shot. |
Gamespot Review says:
Quote: | Less accessible than ever for someone new to the series |

xyzg, if you can take the wait, then feel free to wait until the first DLC for the US version arrives, which I will definitely (try to) buy.
Then I can let you know if it really does work properly with those PSN Cards.

A bit late admittedly, but I've finally gotten around to playing this and I'm pleasantly surprised. It's got a real nice vibe about it and despite the gamespot quote above I've had no trouble getting to grips as it weans you in gently with both humour and straightforwardness. It wasn't long before I got into the swing of things anyway, and from what I've played I'm liking it a lot - so a belated thanks for the recommendation Surray - I wouldn't have even heard of this game were it not for this post*. My only reservations so far would be how the movement/attack system is so strict/rigid and that the interface, whilst very fast and responsive, doesn't take advantage of a 1080p setup.
It's not a system seller, but it is something you should at least try if you own a PS3. With that said though; it's also one of those games I, and perhaps others (?), are instinctively put off trying as it's very oldschool and Japanese in its game mechanics... I'm just glad I eventually got around to it as you really need to play games like this in order to fully appreciate them - and this is well worth playing, if nothing spectacular or revolutionary.
*Hopefully I won't take as long with Demon Souls (another game I've only heard about because of nforce posters).
