Anyone know if an HDMI to DVI cable works with this PS3 before I go out and buy one? And if it does, will it sill allow you to use the optical audio out?

I don't think it does as the HDMI is a digital signal whereas the DVI is still analog. The only way to do this would be to buy an expensive converter box. (I forget the correct name of those devices... but they are not cheap!)

It works. You'll have to use a seperate cable for sound though, using that Multi thingie output.

Edit: @Mister_S:

cool, can you get 1080p through the HDMI to DVi convertor?. If so I will pick one up myself.

From what i am reading, the cable should work as long as the monitor/tv is hdcp compliant.
And, using the DVi cable it should display at 1080p.

If monitor/tv isn't hdcp compliant, then you ill get a blank screen and nothing more.

Yep. The only downside is that you'll be using two cables instead of one.

Edit: most 19"+ monitors have HDCP, that shouldn't be a problem.

Does it still allow use of the optical out with the hdmi cable connected?

I never tried optical, but you can select it. You use the HDMI output for the picture and the big one for sound. So I'd think optical should work fine too. While configuring you can choose seperate outputs for picture and sound.

Ehhh not so fast, what a gross oversimplification you make there. They both carry uncompressed digital signal (thus easy to convert one signal to another), but this is where most similarities end. While HDMI is forward looking, meaning it can expand forward as needs come, DVI is pretty much done already. Even the dual link DVI-D is already showing age in some fields. It is enough to look at the new 1.4 HDMI standard to see how much more advanced it is. Also about sound, not accurate. AMD have introduced with their 3800 and 4800 series of video cards, DVI connections capable of carrying audio.

Again inaccurate. You obviously haven't heard of DVI-A, which the analog standard of the DVI specifications.

DVI is video only without the audio. It works fine on DVI TVs and HDCP compliant monitors. You can still use the optical for audio, that's how I connected my PS3 on my old TV...

1080p works fine if supported by your monitor.

Yes. They are using the dual-link additional connectors to transmit the audio over. Then a DVI-to-HDMI is used to access it. Smile
