I remember there was a way to load backups from HD on the old, fat, ps2. I have a slim one and i was wondering if there is a way to do the same. I noticed there are usb ports, does it recognize drives connected through it?
I googled but all i found are modchips and that dvd swapping technique where you have to buy the special dvd, not a lot about loading straight from HD.
So in short, is it possible to load backups from HD, and if so what in your opinion is the best way/tool to do it. If i have to buy something, i dont really mind as long as it works well.
Thanks.

Sorry dont know what network kit is. So after doing a bit more research it seems the best way is the swap magic? Or is there something better, doesnt have to be an HD loader?

Network adapter was basically exactly what it sounds like, a modem for the PS2 that also was able to connect to a IDE hard drive. You slap a hard drive in there, let HD Loader format the hard drive, and then you can either install games to the HD through the PS2 or - as most people did - just take out the HD attach it to your computer and install ISO's to the HD.

there is some usb loader thingy that works for slim ps2s I think, but there's quite a lot of games that don't work. I'm also not sure what is required to get it to run.. I think it runs from a memory card somehow but getting it on there requires a modded ps2.
I remember seeing some forum where you could send a memory card to trusted forum members who would then put the required stuff onto your memory card and send it back.

the old hdd loader with the big ps2 + network kit has far better compatibility, but there's no way to use it with a slim psp.

so yeah I think for a slim ps2 a modchip or swap magic is the way to go if you want to make sure you can play everything. at least as far as I know.

Modchip is the best way to go. You get frustrated once (assuming you chip it yourself) and then no more problems ever. Using other methods you'll constantly be frustrated. Speaking from my own experience.

Thanks for suggestions. I guess i'll order a modchip since i took my ps2 apart because the small fan thingy wasnt doing for cooling and ps2 would freeze.
Any modchip will do or there are some suggested over others?
Also is it supper hard where you need uber soldering skills or is it relatively easy (like are pins super small)? I was able to solder on new fans for it but i had a lot of space to work with.

I've got Modbo 4.0 chip which is probably the best in that price range (around $20). There's also DMS4 which is solderless but it's pricey: $50 or so. I don't know about soldering because I didn't do it myself.
