I'd go to Greek Cyprus if I'd go that way.

- How's public transportation in Athens? The metro seems to go to a lot of places.
Metro is very useful, you buy a ticket and you can go wherever you want for 90 minutes. Avoid shitty ass buses and keep your things safe from pickpockets.
- Is it smart to book the trips to things like musea and historic places in advance? Maybe there are skip the line cards available?
I don't think you will encounter many problems with tourist crowds in April, it's not worth it to prepurchase museum tickets ... I think. Just go hours before closing time, sometimes they close earlier than they should.
- Any restaurants, fish places in particular, you guys can really recommend?
*Some* restaurants in Plaka are tourist-traps, they only offer "special" dishes and will skin you alive. Will you rent a car?
- Any places we should avoid?
Some places in the center of Athens are pakistani-albanian ghettos, diversity is NOT our strength so stay away.
- Any day trips (max 1h bus ride) you can recommend? Delphi seems to be too far
There are some city sightseeing bus tours. Google it, it's a hop on, hop off thing. They go around some landmarks. A trip to Delphi is a whole day excursion, meehhhh. Go to the flea market in Monastiraki to buy shitty trinkets and also go to the ancient agora in Thissio for sightseeing and then sit there for a coffee, too. In the cafeterias in Thissio, I mean, there are several lined up together in one street.
- Is Paxsali the average Greek?
Yes, it is a very sad state of affairs.
But why are you coming to Athens in April? How much do you like museums? Most people come for summer vacations, they fly to Athens and then hop to an island.

Personally I have an issue when temps go beyond 24-25 degrees and July-August in Greece (Athens in this case) are generally around 30 degrees with higher peaks. Definitely not my scene. It's enough that we've got 25-30 during summers here in the south west of Sweden (which non-Swedish people sometimes refuse to believe). It's gotten worse with really hot summers since the 2000's.
Going off season also means you're not crowded by humongous amounts of other annoying tourists.

Any Greeks here been to Aegina? It's 40 minutes with ferry from Athens and looks beautiful. The major pro, tourists don't seem to care about this island! The really great islands are on the other side of Greece sadly, too far from Athens and flying is crazy expensive.

It's nice and cheap. Well, I have never visited an island in March, though.
