D60? they are only like $500 here including lense so that's less than 300 pounds.

400D? you should be able to get one + 17-55mm lens new for probably less than 300 quid
but the D60 is great too. go to a camera shop and try out both of them, see which one's haptic you like better.
but i'd even go so far and say: get a good old 350D and a decent lens (although the newer canon 17-55mm kit lenses are quite awesome glass pieces for that price) . cameras evolve quickly and get exchanged a lot, lenses don't.

I'm really close to buying a D60, especially considering our upcoming trip to spain in the fall.
I'm just worried I'll hate lugging a big camera around. I'm used to my point and shoot that fits in my pocket.

www.dpreview.com is a great site to check out before making any purchases..
The (Canon) 450D and even 400D should be available cheap as the new 500D has been released. I am a Canon user myself (30D), and am very satisfied. Canon also has a great range of lenses and accessories. The same with Nikon.
If you intend to buy a camera as a P&S replacement only, and have no plans to buy alot of different lenses and accessories in the future, it is worth checking out the entry-level cameras from Sony, Pentax and Olympus as well, as they offer great IQ and features (e.g. in-camera image stabilization) at a cheaper price than Canon and Nikon.
Remember though, you choose to buy into a camera system. It is expensive to change brands if you some time in the future realize you want a specific lens/feature/etc not available from your brand.

When I go out to shoot I usually bring my bag with me.
It's great for walking around and having access to your camera and accessories at all times.
Or the stock strap should work just fine if you just want to carry the camera over your shoulder.

I see the Nikon as the equivalent to the Mac, and the Canona as the equivalent to the PC.
Nikon has more style and is generally accepted more as a 'designers' camera. Whereas Canon delivers more on the technological advances and versatility. Image quality on the Canon is second to none (although a lot of Nikon owners hate to admit it).
I also think fisk should be unbanned.

yuck, after going camping for the 2nd time and taking all the pictures I did, Im after a new camera. I'm torn between the Canon XS/maybe XSI or the Nikon D60, read up on the lenses they come with and the nikon did better against flare which will be huge for me since I'll be doing outdoor shots mostly.
Anyone have comparitive quality shots?

if you want a good cam but don't want/can't afford it to buy multiple lenses, go for one of those bridge cams (you know, the ones which kinda look like DSLRs but have a fixed lens). much, much better value for money. |
nah, I've use the different lenses and find em to be fun to be able to swap out for what you need.

went to a camera store by my house where the people who work there are actual photographer enthusiests. Told em I wanted a decent entry level Digital SLR camera and showed the me the nikon D40/D60 and the Canon Rebel XS, asked me which company I was partial to, told him I'd like to look and learn about both he said great, broke both down for me, let me walk around the store taking pictures with em and I truely love the Nikon D60. Let me try a few different lenses from macro's to wide angle's etc. They have em on sale for like 540 but also has another lense for sale if you buy it.

The 2nd lense had a macro switch on it which you zoom all the way out with the lense then flip the switch and it locks it into only letting you zoom in and out so much. It worked just as well as the actual macro lense I tried out.
