So I sold off my guitar stuff and picked up a Nikon D60 kit that came with an 18-55mm lense and picked up a tamrac bookbag (compliments to esel_gesi)
Now im very beginner on how to use these settings, iso's, arpetures, shutter speeds etc. Is there a guide some of the photo pro's here would recommend that give good explanations etc?

errr why did you buy an dslr if you don't know a thing about fstops and shutters?
that's like buying a condoms when you're a devout christian...
there are loads of tuts out there though
basically it's simple
keep it automatic
going manual won't do you much....
if you know a thing about photography and stuff then yeah... fstop and shutter just manages exposure...
lower iso = less noise less grain
higher iso allows you to shoot late late late and still get an image rather than super black thing
but it'll be grainy / noisy
like on a normal slr 128 at 2.8
well bascially if you look through the view finder...
there's always an indicator that shows if it's too exposed or underexposed...
like with any camera...
so just bracket and learn...
a tut would just explain what each function does...
but since you bought a dslr with a lens and everything.... without learning about photography...
you really don't need to learn much about the functions...
happy shooting though

a decent dslr is upward from 400$+
then lenses
you can get a decent kit for 600$
it all really depends what yo uwanna do...
you can buy a 1500$ dslr if you wanna shoot super slow motion hd movies with it... with like 6000fps

The D60 kit was 540, then bought that same pack that esel has which was like 140...then I bought some other small things.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d60.htm
he suggests the D40 is still better. Seems to be quite the popular site. None the less, for what I know about cameras, and what I'm learning, I'm having A LOT of fun with this thing.
@Waldo
I aim to actually learn how to use all these functions properly, I can't fully learn without having the product here in my hands, at least that's how I see it, I plan on getting different lenses etc. I've already played with the auto settings a bit and there already noticeably better to get what you want out of the shot than auto.
The things I can do in shutter priority mode are already better than what I can do in auto. I didn't want to invest into this hobby so I could click it on auto and start snapping away, I aim to get practice and hopefully be as good as some of the other members on here (esel....your my inspiration)

Stay away from auto and flash for now if you really want to get to know your camera. the best way to learn is practice. Learn your manual modes and their functions. Test these modes in different lighting conditions until you get the hang of what all the functions do. One of the good things about digital over 35mm is that you have the ability to guess and check with out wasting time and money on developing film, so use this to your advantage.
i also recommend shooting in raw. The raw files are easier to edit without huge quality loss like compressed jpegs. Just make sure you have plenty of spare cards to hold the larger raw files.
Know that learning the ins and outs of your camera is not as important as having the right subjects and knowing how to capture them with an interesting composition and perspective.
Anyway, good luck and happy shooting.
