I got 5950 Ultra 256MB, and it's clear it has its directx9 support.
So why the hell, on the game's setup it says directX 8.1 Mode?
can someone help?
Thanks.

Do you have the latest DirectX version 9C. Do you have the latest drivers installed?

This site is in polish
They enabled DX9 on GF5 cards

http://www.benchmark.pl/artykuly/testy/wybieramy_karty_do_HalfLife2/strona-11.html

Edit:
I dunno if it work with warez version of HL2.
Look at the graphs... Are you sure that it is worth it?

Short summary in english:
1. Install ForceWare 66.93
2. Launch STEAM
3. In menu RMB on Half Life 2 -> select properties
4. Launch options -> write "-heapsize 262144 -dxlevel 90"
(these parameteres works also with hl2.exe from emporio proper and prolly other)
5. In directory >\HalfLife2\SteamApps\xxxx\half-life 2\bin, search for dxsupport.cfg and make a back up of it
6. Open dxsupport.cfg with notepad and search for your card (CTRL+F)
next change all of lines (there is 10 of them) written at your card model section to this:

"VendorID" "0x1002"
"MinDeviceID" "0x4E48"
"MaxDeviceID" "0x4E48"
"m_nDriverVersion_Build" "6240"
"DefaultRes" "1024"
"CentroidHack" "1"

(These lines are for Radeon 9800 Pro, so game will recognize your card as card with R350 core)
Save the file and exit

7. Delete file config.cfg from >\HalfLife2\SteamApps\xxxx\half-life 2\hl2\cfg
There will be generated new one. with DX9 support

I don't know, it would propably work on cfg of other cards too...
It looks like HL2 engine detects R350 cards as fully DX9 compatibile, and GF5 not (propably due to shader's architecture of GF5 which isn't that great).

Anyway:
Doom 3 = nVidia
HL2 = ATI
It might be reason too, who knows :/
