A lot of people also recommend flashing from the first SATA port, so just boot to DOS from a USB stick, or CD/DVD, and disconnect the first HDD and replace it with the 360 DVD.

you must have an old PC. you could buy a sata card for PCI or PCIe if you have a spare slot. Otherwise yes you are. phone a friend?

JF does hang a lot, or thats been my experience of it (flashed about 5 consoles).
As someone said earlier, its related to SATA ports I think as I have 4 ports, 2 are in use so I've got ports 3 and 4 free. If I use port 3, I had nearly all the time. If I use port 4 it works no problems. If anything, I thought it would be the other way around.
Also, if you've got an other dvd drives on Sata, I'd highly recomend disconnecting them while you're flashing. Not sure if it was coincidence but my last flash, I didn't disconnect my burner and it was completely screwed afterwards. Windows wouldn't even pick it up. Again, could be conicidence but I'm not convinced, it worked fine for 2 years before the flash

So I've got a new mobo that actually has SATA ports finally, and it wasn't until this thread that I realised I could probably use them to flash my 360. It isn't that easy though right? Don't you need to have a specific chipset for it to work?

Anything that has the Intel ICH8 or ICH9 works fine for flashing 360 drives (tested by me) - ICH7 or ICH10, on the other hand, I can't confirm.

Not intel. I believe it's the AMD 780G chipset...well I should that IS the chipset on this board, so I'm going to assume it's also the one controlling the SATA ports. Honestly I usually pay a guy to do this, but I'd rather save the money doing it myself. Wasn't there a popular website that answered all this stuff? I looked at the sticky and one of the links suggested I had to cut traces on my drive to install a switch?
Bleh :s
