a quick question for your expert minds. is there firmware for newer drives that still allow you to play unsecure sector games or is Ixtreme the only option for newer drives?

Use Ixtreme 1.6 it has a one shot boot mode, so you can boot your non stealth games.

Here's a quote from the Readme "-One shot boot mode! - allows a one off boot of gamedisc without -stealth/partition checks (will still use stealth), use activate.iso disk to activate each time! "

I hope this info helps.

i7 3770k, GTX980, 16GB Ram, SSD Raid0, Internet 3rd world shit not worth mentioning

thanks, I didn't know that.

however I'm disinterested in being banned so this option wouldn't be the best for me + I don't mind patching newer games.

if I go out and buy a 360 today, will I be able to play unstealthed games hassle free regardless of the DVDrom it has?

thanks.

I hope you don't mean patching them from Wave2 to Wave3, as that's a quick journey down the BAN road :-\

As for playing unstealthed games AT ALL, I sincerely don't recommend it. If you go out and buy a new machine today, you'll likely get the Jasper machine with the LiteOn drive - and you'll need 1.51 or 1.60 FW on that drive anyway, which won't load unstealthed games (except for the one-shot method)

I meant disinterested as in it doesn't bother me either way so yeah, i don't mind patching.

Thanks for the info on liteon drives. So basically if I buy a 360 with one of these my vast collection of unstealthed games will be unplayable except for the 'one-shot method'?

That kinda sucks.

Sadly, yes Sad Team Xtreme really tightened the security around booting un-stealthed games ... which is good for future use, but seriously bad for older collections of games that aren't stealthed.

Still, it's rare to find non-stealth games these days --- how old, exactly, ARE your burns?

Very old. Pretty much the entire collection (from Perfect Dark onwards) + a few patched wave 3 games.

Thankfully I've since managed to squeeze some more life from my current 360 but it really is running on borrowed time.

Ouch, sorry to hear that Sad Reallllly sorry... I can't imagine how annoying it'd be to have to redownload and burn them again (can standard PC DVD drives read BACKUPS? I guess you could try to rip and burn)

If it comes down to it I guess I could reduce my collection to just a few quality hand picked games. It just feels like a shame to put so many discs to waste Sad

Update: Ended up with a Liteon. After a lot of reading and the right tools, specifically for Liteon drives, it wasn't a problem. Good news is that thanks to games like Arkham Asylum, it bothers me less whether I can still play on the 'oldies'.

I still recommend trying to rip the games to your PC, then reburning them after running through ABGX360. You can use Xbox Backup Creator to rip your already-burned backups, then just run the ISO through ABGX360 and finally, once fixed, burn back to DL-DVD with IMGBurn.
