Well I recently modded my console to the latest IExtreme 1.6 firmware. Being a newbie to the Microsoft arena, I just wanted to clarify a few things about going on Xbox Live with the games.

1.) I'll be creating the Gold trial a/c in a few days. Now if I go online with the with any game which Abgx360 claims is stealth check passed, is it completely safe?

2.) What is console ban and how does it occur? What are a console bans consequences in the future?

3.) Can I download dashboard updates as and when they release?

Also an OT query, with the new wave 3 games, does the layer break information while burning need to be changed?

No. Nothing is completely safe and as soon as you flash your firmware, you run the risk of being banned.

MS usually ban in waves, every November. What will happen is - if you are insanely unlucky enough to be banned - you'll wake up on morning in November, try to log on to Live, and get a message about your console being banned from accessing. It doesn't give reasons, it just happens.

The ban only applies to the console. Your account is perfectly safe (unless you were playing Halo ODST Razz)

If you're not banned from Live; yes. You can download dashboard/game updates without fear*. HOWEVER! MS recently fixed a pretty significant exploit in the latest firmware and that blocks the possibility of homebrew support (Linux OS installations, media players, unsigned-XEX code, emulators, etc etc) so if you want that; don't update to the latest dashboard.

Downside, of course, is that you can't play online if you do that. Juggle the options, weigh the pros and cons of each and then decide.

As for Wave3/LB? No, it's still the same. Just burn the .DVD file that comes with the download, or run the ISO through ABGX360 to auto-create one if it's not there.

*If you ARE banned from Live, don't fret overmuch - MS hosts the latest downloads for the dashboard on their site, so you can download it - put it on USB stick or CD/DVD - and update automatically.

Sadly this doesn't apply to games. The patches are only available over XBL.

Thanks for the heads up Sabin (as always Wink). Although I have another small query. You mentioned that once I get console banned I can't connect to Live, EVER right? Does this affect my warranty for the console in anyway? What are the chances of getting a full hardware ban you think? I don't mind my Live a/c being banned as I just want to try out the trial a/c. But my main concern is the console getting banned and then no Xbox Live ever again. Sad

Actually, that's a good question about the warranty. I'm honestly not sure if it would still be valid if the console was banned from XBL. I can't see why it wouldn't be, as that's a software issue - and the warranty is there for hardware stuff, but I think someone with more experience should be able to tell you.

There is one thing that would affect your warranty though; opening the machine in the first place to flash the drive. If you do this yourself, make sure to use some kind of heating trick to remove the MS warranty seal properly (a hair-dryer on low heat should be enough to cause the sticker to just lift off, allowing you to replace it with it ease once you're done) so as to keep your warranty intact.

As for the the machine itself? Sorry to tell you, but it's a full hardware/360 ban and if you get one - that machine can't go on XBL ever again. There are chips and solutions to override the ban, but they are so much hassle - and you need access to an unbanned machine anyway - that it's just not worth even trying. If your machine gets banned; it's time to buy a new one.

MS ask for your console Serial when you call them for warranty.
If it's a banned serial they tell you to fuck off.

Holy shit! Now I'm really afraid of going online. Now how do I differentiate between a console ban and a Xbox Live a/c ban? Is there any message in specific that I get on the dashboard?

Also could you list some causes as to why we get this ban, apart from the obvious fact that the console is modded?

BTW my warranty sticker has been retained by the modder I gave it to. Very Happy

Wait, are you sure about that? I was under the impression that they ban your console ID which is supposed to be different from your serial number at the back (or I could be wrong).

there isn't really xbox live account ban, MS first talked about that a few weeks ago, for the warez release of halo odst, dunno if they did it or if it was bullshit to scare people.
So 99,99% you'll get a console ban, wich means buy a new one, plug your HDD , play, get banned again a year or so later, rinse and repeat.
You can't be sure for ban causes, the best things you can do to avoid it are checking that your games are stealth patched, avoid playing games before the official release date, don't modify your isos (removing wave 3 sector i.e) etc.. but as soon as you flash your console you may be banned.

For the warranty with a banned console i'm sure about it, when my first console died (rrod, and the console was banned a few months ago), i called the support, when i told them my serial number, they told me that they won't accept it, as my serial number was banned, violation of terms of use blablabla... It's in France, dunno if it's the same for other countries.

Console ban:

Account ban/suspension:

There are only a few causes;

Modding the FW on the drive. Running non-stealthed games. Running games pre-release. Running review-copy games.

Unfortunately, those updates they host on xbox.com are old as shit, like...6 months old or worse

Yeah I learned that the hard way. Tried to download the update from MS website and it was a 2008 release. Embarassed

Anyway Sabin thanks for those images. Hopefully, I won't push it that far to get a console ban, but would be cautious enough while going online.
