After waiting to upgrade for what seems like an age I've finally taken the plunge and ordered an i5 750 which will be arriving this week, which is comparable (if even slightly faster) to an i7 920 for gaming, slower for apps, but it's £50 less.

I only use my PC for gaming, surfing and streaming so it suits my needs perfectly, but if I used it for encoding, video editing or rendering I'd have gone with the i7. The i5 is easily overclockable to 4Ghz with a good cooler (I bought a Zalman CNPS10X), the stock cooler can reach 3.5Ghz or it can be boosted using a turbo button (without BIOS intervention) which all the new 1156 mobo's have. The new 1156 socket also runs at about 56w less than the 1366, so there is plenty of choice out there to suit everyone's needs.

The i7 860 on a 1156 looks interesting, but it's £70 more than the i5 750, and I couldn't really justify the cost as I have other hobbies, and besides the i5 is plenty powerful enough for my needs.

The 1366 maybe the better upgrade path choice, but as I always change my CPU, GPU, Mobo and RAM en-bloc it makes no difference to me. I'm not planning on running SLI or Crossfire (the board supports both), so I've gone with a GTX 275 which is enough for me, 4GB G.Skill Ripjaw and an Asus P7P55D Pro.

I like gaming, but not as much as I used to, and certainly not enough to run 2 GFX cards. Providing I can run GTA4 and Operation Flashpoint 2 at full whack I'll be haopy Smile

I thought they'd improved the game with the last patch, but even on medium and smooth it's going to be a better experience than a 360, I hope Smile

I use commandline.txt to force the higher settings with: -nomemrestrict -norestrictions

With latest patch applied and at 1920x1200 with all settings at maximum (vsync off), framerate is 35-40 fps (CPU/GPU running @ stock speeds). Game is smooth at all times.

With the useless ingame benchmark I score this:

That looks good enough for me, and that's unclocked, although I'll be running it at 1680 x 1050 until I upgrade the monitor or buy an LCD TV Smile

FUCKING DROOL!!!

Maaaaan, my next comp (couple months, baby!!) has an i7-920 and a GTX-275 with it (I'm gonna be changing the 275 for a 5870 or GT300, whichever performs better) - so if I can get that kind of performance at 1680, I'll be an extremely happy gamer Very Happy
