Gah!

My 360-Elite has been trouble-free since the day I got it - and trouble-free in the six months prior when my younger brother had it - but now, after waking up and turning it on this morning, I get a funky green display with shit-tons of graphics corruption. I "uh-oh'ed" and turned my machine off and back on again; Bam. "E74. Please Contact Xbox Support"

Just been reading online and it seems it's not fatal and often passes after a few mins, with a bunch of random "solutions" on how to fix it anyway. I'll just leave my machine off for an hour or so then re-try it.

*sigh*

Note to everyone: Falcon's aren't perfect either. Next stop; Jasper! Rolling Eyes

Neutral The reason I didn't buy a 360, stupid technical problems because of MS cutting corners to make it cheaper for them.

I've had the machine for a year now and my younger brother had it for about six months before that - one of the first to get a Falcon - and it's been great so far. Dunno how, or why, it suddenly decided to go tits up Sad

Falcon or not, these problems seem random : for example I have a december 06 360, and it works perfectly.. ALthough it has a HITACHI (aka shitty dvd drive), at least no RROD

I ran the machine without the AV cable attached and it powered up fine, no issues and no errors. I guess I *might* have found the culprit. I'll pop into town on Monday and pick up a new cable.

e74 is covered by the 3 year rrod warranty now... just send it in

My 2.5 year 360 rrod'eed a month or so a go, the same evening i had my console picked up by ups from my door. 1 week later i had a replacement, couldn't ask for a better service imo... all at the grand price of zero pennies

the only downside for me was the new one came with a benQ drive, after usng it for about half hour on GTA4 I went straight on-line and ordered a sammy Smile

I'm going to have to, but I'm gonna try a new cable first. Can't be THAT expensive - and would save 2-3 weeks "fix" time -- as well as the luck aspect, seeing as how my case has been opened and thus warranty is supposedly void.

speaking of the devil : just turned on my xbox and after 2min, I saw mutlicolor dots/stripes all over the screen and it froze after like 2min... I can still turn it on, no RROD or error, but will have dots and will freeze.

I guess the GPU is dead, should I put it into the garbage since it's obvious I opened it before (so no warranty imho) or there is a chance to fix it cleaning it or whatever ?

Kinda on-topic.

Played some Cellfactor on my 360 today. I turned it off, then turned it back on an hour after. Three red lights, even though I hadn't touched it since I turned it off. Oh well, gonna replace the x-clamp, and hope it doesn't happen again.

Anyway, I feel for you, MS should stop fucking us over with their cheap hardware.

I've had two go on me in the past fortnight with exactly the same issue as cyclonefr. Both were early models so no longer covered by warranty and both had been opened.

Couldn't find a fix for either so literally pillaged the drives (as spares). Sold a 120GB HDD drive for £65 on ebay and bought the red jasper xbox for £180. flashed the red one (Liteon drive) as at least it might stand a chance of lasting.

Yep, you can spoof presuming you have keys for both the old drive and the liteon. To get the liteon key, the easiest method is use an xecuter ck3 and probe.
I've done got keys from a hitachi 78, samsung 28 and a liteon and the liteon, despite the additional hardware was the easiest to do. That might just be me though Smile

Sadly the 360 is now history. Once I returned to the UK, I immediately set about looking for repair options (MS not being one of them, as I no longer had the warranty seal on - and wasn't willing to take the risk about sending it back to them and "hoping for the best")

The first place I went to wanted £89.99 to repair it, originally, but then amended the offer and instead said they would swap out my 360 Elite base unit for one of their new Jasper base units from an Arcade bundle. I would keep my HDD and cables, but would still have to pay £89.99 for the pleasure. They also refused to flash the new machine and started acting in a condescending manner, taunting my collection of backups and saying "you get more value for money by buying games" and "it's cheaper to just buy them, as you don't have to buy blank DVD9s all the time"

.....

Yeah, so it's cheaper to pay £35-50 for a single game rather than paying £25 for a pack of 25 Verbatim DVD9s? His answer to that;

"Yes, it's cheaper and much less hassle. How many of your backups do you REALLY play? I'll bet you only play one or two, and you've bought how many disks? Waste of money, it's cheaper to just buy the games"

Fucking muppet.

So then I contacted the "reputable" Total Console Repair, who guaranteed a successful E74 fix - without changing out the components, so I at least get to keep my iXtreme 1.6-flashed Benny drive. Price for this? £64 total, which included the repair and the to/from costs for courier pickup and delivery. The downside was that since the machine HAD been opened prior, they couldn't give me a warranty on the repair - but they verbally guarantee a complete fix.

Bargain! I took that option. Machine was gone for about 9 days and came back fully working.

It lasted less than 6 days before E74ing again. Phoned them back, they apologised and said they're willing to try again - but without a warranty, I'd have to pay again.

Another £64.

Another 8 days wait.

Another 5 days after the fix, it died again.

...... anger rising.

Phoned again, and they said they'd fix it for free one final time. A further promise to do their best to fix it permanently.

When it finally came back the 3rd time? Yeah, it died less than a week after. The guy on the phone said the machine is "beyond economical repair" and offered me a £25 refund. £25 out of the £130 I'd paid >:[

I wish to fucking god I could sue that company.

X360 is in the bin, back in England, now.

Dude, I don't hold hard feelings against anyone Smile I knew the risks about MS and their dodgy build-quality, I knew my beloved 360 would die eventually ... what I'm more pissed about is ridiculous service that charged me £130 and finally said "sowwwy... no fix'y, here.. have less than a fifth of your money back"

My 1 year old box died last week (3rrod), i sent it off and a replacement is due for delivery to me this friday.

I flashed it twice in the year but still had the seal intact, i left it flashed aswell!! lol my warranty is in date until nov 09 now aswell..

Are all boxes replaced with the liteon drives now and will this mean i will have to buy a probe to read the dvd key to enable flashing?

I wish I'd kept the seal on mine (hairdryer trick to remove it, lol) but meh .. I was eager to flash, so I just ripped the bloody thing off Very Happy

As for needing the probe? Yes, I'm afraid. You'll need the Probe and a connectivity kit -- possibly also a certain VIA SATA card, if your onboard SATA chipset won't read the drive.

lol, ok it's not exactly cheaper ... but damn I'm lucky if I actually play 20/150 of my backups :/

but still, 150 backups at $1.50 a disc = $225 ... games here are ~$60 so that doesn't even cover 4 games.

don't know what it is ... getting kinda bored of it lately. actually haven't played it for the last couple months (ok 30 mins of terminator and 1 hour of red faction) until just recently with batman.

Until the poor machine died, I was practically LIVING INSIDE games like Prototype (TripA title, kept me playing for almost 20hrs) Red Faction Guerilla (again, TripA title - worth the wait!) and Resident Evil 5 (god this game is superb!)

I'm more pissed now about the fact that Shadow Complex is out, and Magna Carta 2 is coming soon. I wasn't overly impressed by Star Ocean, though.

Yeah the hairdryer trick worked ok for me but i found after flashing my 3rd box that just heating up the sticker but then just leave it in place, then just carefully seperating the two casing halves left the sticker intact on one half of the casing.

Ahh that sucks about the kit but it's worth it Laughing

Definitely! I've got 52 games and I play a good 60% of them regularly .. so the small outlay for the flashing kit is worth it, IMO.

To be perfectly honest mate, by that point - I'd just about had enough of the fucking thing. I didn't want to go through the hassle of selling it on eBay, maybe getting a "whole" £30 .. and I didn't want to sit there for hours trying homebrew remedy after remedy. If a pro team couldn't fix it, I doubted that I could either.

I left it in England with instructions to bin it, or find someone else to fix it - but my mum said she'll just bin it.

This sucks. Sad But wait, if they fix something, and you PAY for that, they must give you warranty on this particular repair job. I mean if you have E74 again, they must fix it again for free, if you have other problems (GPU died, RRoD etc) - you pay. If they screw up it's not your problem - you payed your money. If they can't give you any kind of warranty they are not allowed to sell their services. I know that for sure sabin Mad

That's the point mate, they can - if they offer you the choice. They specifically said "since you have already opened the machine, we cannot offer a warranty. Do you still want to go through with the repair?"

I didn't have to accept Sad
