|
 |
Before people start frothing at the mouth this is a Industry prediction.
Analyst: PS3 to outsell 360 and Wii by cycle end
Quote: | The PlayStation 3 will outsell its rivals over its lifetime, becoming the best selling home console of the current generation - according to a new report by the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices (SACHD) service.
The prediction is based on the PS3 remaining a commercial platform for five years after the Wii has been replaced. Report author David Mercer predicts a 127 million unit lifetime title for the PS3, compared to 103 million for the Wii.
The global totals for the three consoles currently stand at approximately 68 million for the Wii, 38 million for the 360 and 32.5 million for the PS3.
The report also predicts that worldwide home console sales will drop by 9 per cent in 2010, to a total of 47.5 million; 17.5 million for the Wii, 14.0 million for the PS3, 10.5 million for the 360 and 5.5 for the PlayStation 2.
Writing on his blog, Mercer estimated that the Wii installed userbase will hit 76 million by the end of 2010. "But the signs are that the Wii has peaked in terms of console sales, and its installed base will begin to decline after 2011", he commented.
"These estimates are derived from our core forecast scenario, but we have developed various scenarios for each platform. Uncertainties clearly surround each of the major platforms, particularly relating to the new services and upgrades planned by Sony and Microsoft", added Mercer.
"Natal on the Xbox could be more beneficial to 360 sales than expected, and Sony’s own motion controller, together with its plans to upgrade all PS3s to 3D capability, also represent potential for upside to our core forecasts." |

Keep your cash in your pocket but it is surprising especially as the wii sells so well among non gamers. (ie: joe public)

just wait until they phase out the DVD. Sonys console bluray exclusivity will earn them a lot of money down the line wether its ps3 or ps4.

I can see the PS3 starting to outsell the 360, that's easy enough to believe - especially as the price keeps dropping - but the Wii? Nah, that damned thing is like a snowball. It just keeps getting bigger the longer it keeps rolling. Already 79 million sold and it looks like it's not slowing down any time soon AND it's still keeping its price too.

I don't see this happening any time soon, certainly not in lifetime of the PS3. The 360 and Wii's use of DVD doesn't help that phasing out either.

considering the ps3 launched almost a year and a half AFTER the 360 it is not so surprising that they predicted it will be outselling the 360 by the cycles end... for it's blu-ray drive if nothing else.

If Natal and the PS3 wand thingies are not too expensive and the consoles continue to fall in price I can see an upturn in those two respective consoles and a downturn in the Wii's sales. Basically if they can make their consoles more accessible to Joe Public and put out some interesting titles it'll be a very interesting next few years.

Nothing new is said in the article. You can sum it up with this one line " The prediction is based on the PS3 remaining a commercial platform for five years after the Wii has been replaced. Report author David Mercer predicts a 127 million unit lifetime title for the PS3, compared to 103 million for the Wii"
All i have to say is " No shit Sherlock" The PS3 will be like the PS2, when others have moved on to bigger better things, the PS3 will take market share. I don't know how anyone can think this is a win.
I would rather a upgraded console, since both 360 and PS3 are not to powerful anymore compared to PCs.
That article basically says, the PS3 will remain last until others leave the race. Well it may take second, but it will never outsell the Wii.

nono, I was talking about WHEN it will happen, cos it eventually will, blu ray will rule and become cheaper and like the VHS DVD will become yesteryears news. When this happens, Sony's patent on blu-ray disk consoles will really drive them ahead of the competition until something better comes out, which I really doubt for a LONG time.. it just simply cant get that much better quality than BR..

Sony created BluRay, but any company can use it if they purchase a license.

Prove it.
Show me an article that specifically states only Sony can ever have BR-equipped consoles.

I doubt that they would prevent enyone from using BluRay since they want the format to spread. Even if they tried they would just get their asses sued to hell for monopoly abuse, you are not allowed to create a de-facto standard and only give licenses to companies you like.
The reason why the PS3 is the only console with a BR drive to date is because its price outweights its use for current games.

And it was a big risk from Sony, if the HD-DVD would have won the war it would had shoot the PS3 to dust. At that time it was basiclly a cointoss in who would win. MS went with a standalone HD-DVD while Sony built in their blu-ray in the PS3.
I don't think (I have no proof though) that the BR is patented to Sony's consoles alone, didn't MS say they were concidering building a BR player to the 360 now when the HD-DVD failed?

MS said that it is "not out of question" but now they focus on digital distribution.

No the cycle of the galactic ring, so we're looking at some 200 million years.

Um ,doesn't the BDA (Blu-ray Diask Association) hold the patents for blu-ray, and controls the distribution rights/royalties etc? Sony is merely a member of the BDA, as well as many other hardware manufacturers.

I don't care about PS3 outselling anything. The more important issue is when it'll finally be cracked. Right now it's kind of useless since you cannot download the games.

I don't think the PS3 is even worth cracking at the moment with the current cost of PC blu-ray burners and blank media. How much is a blank bluray nowadays £5/6-7€ still?. My hunch is that it will be cracked one day but only when blu-ray is more commonplace and the cost of it's blank media and burners come down in price. The PS3 hasn't many exclusives anyway. Would make little sense in burning off a FFXIII onto a blu-ray anyway when you could just burn it off onto a 50 pence verb for a 360. If one day they managed to open up the PS3 like they did with the PSP it would truly be a fantastic console though.

When I bought my first DVD burner back in the first days of the original xbox crack it cost me over 400 euros and plenty of people were buying them then. I suppose the difference is that the discs themselves didn't cost an arm and a leg like blank blurays.
And who knows, maybe if enough people started buying them it would bring the prices down.

Blueray will never rule.. The death of the DVD will be caused by streaming media.
