i've got a samsung f1 1TB hdd which is essentially my "work" drive...now since last week, the damn thing is giving me CRC errors when moving/copying files, read errors in winrar, photoshop crashes etc.

- ran chkdsk, which found some errors, fixed them. ran it a second time, found nothing, everything seems fine. crashes/errors continue.
- ran that error detection thingy from the drive properties dialog (which is essentially chkdsk iirc?), crashes halfway through, winxp freezes.
- fired up spinrite. guess what? it crashed halfway through Laughing

i think it's just some fauly sectors, because more or less all the old stuff i have on the drive works just fine.
RMA is out of the question since the drive contains research data (which i'm a bit paranoid about) and the gutmann method crashed after salvaging the files left on the drive.

so is there any other way to get it working properly again or should i call it quits?

There are PLENTY of apps out there that'll completely destroy any data left on that drive.

A failing HD is a failing HD, really no way of fixing it.

those apps all work the same way: overwrite multiple times until the memory effect is gone. doesn't matter which one if the machine crashes while trying to write on one of the faulty sectors Wink

I had same drive for about 2 weeks. The Samsung 1TB gave me same errors randomly. I was able to RMA it though.

Its gone.. Dont bother fixing it. Those drives I read had many problems.

Call it quits.

I used KillDisk to destroy all my data on it before I returned it.

My serial ata Western Digital drive was making like a clacking sound when it was going out. I made sure to get a replacement drive and transfer all my files as soon as I could before it totally died. I lost some files where I guess the disc platters went bad but I was able to save most of my files.
