In total roughly 9 hours of doing nothing but watching cutscenes.

That's pretty much what disappointed me about this game too. You play about 10min, and you have a cut-scene of 1 hour. All the previous metal gears contained a lot of cut-scenes too, but at least it still felt like a game. It's obvious that in MGS4 you spend more time watching cut-scenes than actually playing, MGS1-3 contained more game time than cut-scenes... (plus some of the cut-scenes in MGS4 are pretty damn boring (pretty much everything aboard the plane)

The cutscenes aren't bad, but often you would want to play that scene for yourself instead of just watching it as a cutscene... I had the feeling that I was "betrayed" by some scenes because they weren't interactive.

Well I thought that the game was awesome. The cutscenes are very well done, but oh my god, the last one at the end of the game goes on for what feels like forever. I think that in total the last scene and credits and then another cutscene, goes on for just over an hour and a half.

Didn't mind the cutscenes myself either, as they're very well done. The ending is also probably the best game and movie ending I've ever seen.

I'd rather have japanese games full of cutscenes, than american games with no story.

I borrowed a friends PS3 and got through the game in about a week some time ago.
I really, REALLY tried to like MGS4. Because it's one of those series of games that I've missed and always wanted to get in on since everyone praised them to high heaven.
But MGS4, yikes.. It was, in total honesty, one of the shittiest games I've played. I was expecting two things: stealthy gameplay and great storytelling. It has neither. It's just another FPS with some segments of "stealth".
And the story is so terribly told that it gave me diabetes. If you deicde to make your game into a giant asslick of a movie then don't think you can stuff it full of cliches, bad acting and terrible storystructure just because it's a game. You decided to make your game into a movie then it will be judged AS a movie and not as a game.
Games still have the benefit of the doubt when i comes to storytelling because as long as the gameplay is good enough you can get away with a cheesy story. But not if the entire fucking thing is a movie with small interludes of gameplay, then you actually have to tell a good story.
MGS4 does not.

I might have come off as a bit of a raving loon in my post and you both came to the conclusion that I forgot to mention myself. That a ton of the stuff that happened storywise had me totally oblivious, I had no idea what was happening, what was being referenced and so on. And that in turn ofc turned me off the story even more. It felt alot like being left out of the loop, here these events that mean nothing to me and they are portayed as monumental.
So yeah you are both probably right that someone who has grown up with, or even just taken the time now to play through the originals, will most likely enjoy this much more than I did

Just to echo what is said above, MGS4 serves as a bookend to the series so if you've not played the originals then I honestly can't see how you'd enjoy it. The fan-service and nostalgia it evokes is quite overpowering, and it brought back such strong memories from playing the originals all those years ago. So if you've never played them to begin with you're not going to appreciate that quality, and it is a quality I haven't experienced in any other game that I can think of.
...I would not consider it the strongest MGS title, but as an existing MGS fan you couldn't really ask for any more - and put in that context it's a great game.
Quote: | javlar, I agree with you that MGS4 is less stealth than its predecessors were, that's definitely true. |
Well, the default difficulty levels, including 'normal', are a lot easier this time around, so you really need to crank it up to be challenged. The game is also a lot more forgiving and gives you more freedom. You could conceivably play this like any other action-shooter such as Gears of War and forgo stealth altogether.
...and I think that's the biggest problem really. By default it is too easy, and resorting to violence en-masse is both an entertaining and cheap way of either getting through the game or getting past a particularly challenging obstacle. Players can do that now where in the previous titles it was so cumbersome and difficult to pull off that you'd never have considered it an option. It does impact the balance of the game, and I think that changes the mindset of a player, especially those unfamiliar with the earlier titles. It's sort of the equivalent of playing Hitman and just running through the corridors shooting people willy nilly.
