Borderlands

Publisher:2K
Developer:Gearbox
Genre:action-RPG
Release date:Q4 2008
Also on: PS3 | X360

Story/Description:
Quote:

Gearbox Software is busy. After putting the finishing touches on Ubisoft's Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC), the Texas-based developer will shift its attention to a shooter based on the Aliens films. (The company is also in predevelopment of a Heat game.) However, the latest Game Informer cover invokes another iconic sci-fi movie--Mad Max--when describing another Gearbox title, Borderlands.

And you thought preapocalyptic traffic was bad...
The GI cover reveals the unnamed project Gearbox employees have obliquely referenced is, in fact, a hybrid sci-fi shooter and role-playing game. Though details on Borderlands are currently scant, the print magazine did let slip that it will feature four-player online co-op, as will Halo 3. The magazine also compared Borderlands to Blizzard's classic action-RPG Diablo, and said it will be coming to the 360, PS3, and PC.

The Game Informer cover, which shows off-road vehicles, and Mad Max references have led some to compare Borderlands to Rage (PC, PS3, 360, Macintosh), the recently revealed postapocalyptic driving/shooting game from id Software. Though no release date has yet been revealed for either game, they appear to be part of a growing number of high-profile titles set in a less-than-rosy near future. Also on the horizon is Bethesda's much-anticipated Fallout 3 (PC, 360, PS3), which resurrects the classic RPG series in the radioactive ruins of Washington, DC

I'm so getting this, am a total sucker for post-apocalyptic games (and post-apoc fiction in general). The 'over 500,000 different weapons' feature sounds like fun, obviously they'll be sometimes just minor differences, but I bet there'll be some hilarious weapons too.

500,000 weapons is what you call a gimmick.

Game seems kinda interesting though.

Of course, but the system seems to generate weapons with enough variety to avoid it being just a bland and pointless feature. Tbh I'm more interested in how they've created the game world, the overkill weapons is just a bonus.

Yeah, I agree with that. I haven't seen any NPC interaction yet. I assume there is dialogue and story in this game, not just shooting?

I'm... gah.... I'm a bit torn at the moment. I love the idea, love the RPG-aspect to the game, love the customization -- but I hate the fact that it just looks like a run-of-the-mill shooter --- with major emphasis on coop play.

I've already had all hopes of "Left 4 Dead" ruined thanks to the fact that it's a close-quarters, scary, zombie game -- that is online coop only. Now there's a Post Apocalyptic FPS-RPG hybrid that looks to be the same way; confined to multiplayer coop if you actually want to have any fun.

*sigh*

I just hope, and I'm with Parallax on this one, that there's going to be questing and NPC interaction.

According to Gearbox Software's Steve Gibson, the cover art for the June issue of PC Gamer is an actual in-game screenshot, bereft of any post processing. While it's not technically cel-shading, it's certainly something more than your average 3D rendering, looking more like an image you'd find in a comic book than anything you'd see on a computer screen. I think it's rather fetching, personally.

Definitely an original look if that's really true.

Been looking forward to this game for a long time, the new graphics is incredible! I think 3D graphics looks best using some kind of cell shading/cartoon style because we're still far away from having gfx that looks close to, for example, real humans. Crysis for example just looks really artifical while a game like this looks incredible stylish.

They are gorgeous, but they're not cell-shaded. Seems there was a massive outcry from "fans" that didn't like the idea of a cell-shaded FPSRPG. One of the chief designers, "Randy", put out a public statement about it.

http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=71075

Quote:

Heh! No, Borderlands is not cel-shaded - it's a gritty and serious world after all. But since the game was first unveiled we have made big advancements with the art direction and the technology to support the art and have produced some pretty impressive, even shocking results.

We weren't expecting a story about this to break this week, but I'll tell you that the http://www.borderlandsthegame.com website will soon be getting new content that will expose how far we've gone with the art. If the story you guys broke today makes too much noise for us to deal with we may decide to speed up when we update the site with media. Also, PC Gamer came to visit us recently to check out and play the game with us. The result of that is that the next issue of PC Gamer has Borderlands on the cover and inside there is a big story with a lot of images and a story written by Dan Stapleton. Finally, there's always E3 in a few months where attendees can see the game live. I know some folks have figured out that we've done something big to Borderlands even if no one is quite sure what we've done yet and I know I'm still being a bit cryptic on that, but frankly we aren't quite ready for this story to get out.

Cheers!

- Randy

Well, I'm on page 27 right now (of 43!) of a topic JUST about the new art design in the official forum. So far I'm given three indications;

1. The developers TRULY care about their fans and have, judging by the sheer number of GEARBOX EMPLOYEES posting and listening, taken a lot of criticism to heart.

2. The art design has massively polarised the community. It's *not* Cel-Shaded, but is *is* a more "artful" design. Strong black borders, varied colour-schemes, and - sadly - it seems a stronger influence on character designs from animè.

3. The core gameplay hasn't changed from what was originally known. Everything that made the game THE game, is still there. Co-op, vast open-world (though still spread into zones over two DVD9s, as opposed to the single zone that was originally planned) and a metric shit-ton of weapons and quests.

They constantly refer to the latest release of PC Gamer and the mammoth article contained therein, but I've not read it myself (only came out a few days ago for subscribers in the UK, being a UK-based magazine) - nor is anyone allowed to post scans. ONE, cropped, image has been shown - and it's an ingame screenshot that looks vastly different to the original vision. Whether that's good or bad remains to be seen, as you really can't tell quality from a single screenshot. We need videos.

My anticipation for this game hasn't dropped a notch, especially as I don't really have anything against cel-shaded graphics (Crackdown and Silverfall are two of my favourite games) -- but I am getting a bit more nervous about the game itself. Character designs have changed radically (Mordicai was a beefy, warrior-type, grunt in the original version -- but now he's a 14yr old looking anime schoolboy. Worrying) and that's affected how I look at the game.

I'm still looking around online for these supposed leaked scans, but so far all I'm finding are the old ones leaked to a French site years ago and a single, cropped, image.

On the left is how it looks now (ingame screen, not render) and on the right is how it USED to look.

I prefer how it looks now.

How it used to look is just too generic, and the character doesn't really have any character to him. More muscle on Mr. Skinny would be nice, but I don't mind either way since the new screen is much more attractive and less generic looking.

Oh and don't forget to check out the official site and sign up for the newsletter. Apparently the "media blackout" is over now and a massive update is coming soon (word from the devs on the forum and also hinted at on the main page)

Different models TO A DEGREE. There are base models for, heh, the "base" of the weapon -- then each weapon changes depending on what upgrades/addons are attached to it. IE; scopes, extended mags, stocks, chambers.. etc etc.

Fuck. Yeah.

I loved seeing that golden outline solidify into a wicked, steam-punk, weapon upgrade. I've not seen anything like that in any game since OR prior. Let's just hope Borderlands recaptures some of that "whoa!" feeling.
