Well been a while since I last played Civ 4 so it's about time... Never really bothered with mods apart from Fall from Heaven, so please recommend any other good ones you've tried!

Since cultural and diplomatic paths are for wimps, anything that makes warfare better would be especially great... Think I want to play something closer to the main game for starters, but if you know any good TC's apart from FfH, do tell.

Feature-wise the Rise of Mankind seems sweet; could I play some smaller mods alongside with it or how do Civ4 mods in general get along with each other (avoiding any obvious overlapping, of course)?

Oh, and can I safely update to the latest patch version of BtS? I do recall there being some issues with it breaking mods when it was originally released.

All I've got installed is Civ4 + Warlords exp. Even second exp. is too clogged with nonsense for my taste.

I used Wolfshanze's mod last time I played. It adds a bunch of units and technologies to the modern era, which was quite lacking in vanilla. I prefer Wolfshanze's mod to Rise of Mankind since it doesn't deviate too much from the vanilla game, and it was pretty well balanced too.

Yeah that looks nice as well, might try it if I start a game from 1800's onwards.

Usually prefer a long game from the earliest point possible, and I restart a lot so some content for earlier eras would be nice too. Razz

Edit: Yeah think I'll try RoM now - it even has its own submods.

If you are into burning stuff to the ground then RoM is your ball, if on the other hand you want a more challenging empire management try Revolutions mod.

Civ4 mod system sucks a bit in the sense that only one mod can be loaded so you cant really mix and match smaller mods to your taste, you are dependant on the modpacks.

I think we are well overdu on a sequel here, I am not even counting that console crap they released as a viable sequel. I wonder if anyone bought that at all

RoM's downside is that the models of a considerable number of units (particularly the Hi-Tech ones) are damn ugly.

I cannot stand that: models should be superior or equal to the default ones. If the modder can't find a suitable graphic for the unit he wants, then he must do without it. It's not like RoM has a unit shortage at any rate.

Some technology icons are rather sloppy, too.

Fall from Heaven II

http://kael.civfanatics.net/

It's a really good fantasy setting mod.

Quote:

Fall from Heaven II is a dark fantasy mod for Civilization IV. The Age of Ice has ended, what is left of the once great empires of man have formed into small tribes, ready to rebuild and retake that which was lost.

But the world is not empty. Hordes of barbarians await these new civilizations. Wild animals stalk hapless scouts and reckless emissaries. Giant spiders lie in patient wait in the jungles and the forests waiting for their prey to take that last, fatal, step.

There is great evil, but also selfless good. There are those who strive to remain neutral in the coming conflict as opposed ideologies break the world asunder once again. The first goal, is survival. The second goal is power, for good or ill.

Will you pursue power through strength of arms or arcane studies, through piety or blasphemy? Choose carefully. On each path you will meet allies, and bitter foes, and the deeper you delve into the secrets of combat, or sorcery, or the divine, the harder it will be to turn back.

Rise of Mankind is great, really loving everything Zappara added to the game, the new tech tree especially. Loved how when I first looked into the tech tree screen and started scrolling further, it just kept going and going and going. Very Happy

Guess I should've started with higher difficulty tho (never went higher than Noble in vanilla because I don't like giving the AI an unfair advantage).

With my current game as England (Noble difficulty with Henry VIII, one of the two leaders with SCI/IND), I dominate the tech tree and can spam wonders like no other... It's given me such an edge at this point, 775 AD, that I don't think I can lose this game even if I tried.

ShadowB:

What version of RoM did you try last? I got the latest 2.8 and before starting a proper game I went to the world builder and checked quite a few units. None of them really were an eyesore compared to the vanilla units as far as I could tell.

A few pics:

There's lots of great map-creating scripts that come bundled with RoM; this one's using my favorite, Smart Map. This is only the 3rd largest size, too: the largest comes with 25 rival civs by default so you can just imagine what the size of that is. Very Happy

Small (and that's small) part of the tech tree. I know some may not like it, but after initially feeling overwhelmed by the amount of new techs, I'm enjoying it. There's always some new, interesting ones to pick and it doesn't take ages to research a single tech.

Imo one of the best changes in RoM are the revamped Civics. There's a lot more options now, and it's not always the latest in the tech tree that's best for each situation.

The categories are government, power, society, economy, religion, welfare and future (which is, obviously, unlocked near the end). All but the Future category have 8 options; future has 6.
Earlier versions also had a civic category for the military, guess it got taken out for balancing issues, but hopefully it'll come back in one of the updates.

Last spoiler tag will bug out unless this text is here.

I tried 2.8 as well. Check the future (Hi-Tech) ones, especially the infantry. And I also remember seeing some ugly tanks.

I didn't get past the Civilopedia after spotting those. Razz
