Well, I've started overclocking a bit tonight (have only raised my FSB to start with) and I'm using Speedfan and Core Temp (both newest versions) to check my temp while having my processor on full load with prime95...

But Speedfan and Core Temp reports very different temps... Speedfan is at 63-65 (on core 1 and 2) and core temp reports 58 to 60 degrees. Which one should I trust? Or is there a better temp reading app?

By the way, this is my CPU:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz Socket LGA775, 2MB

I've got it running with a 300 fsb at 2.4ghz now, I know the temps are way to hot for that little overclock but I need to apply new thermal paste and get rid of all the compressed dust too. But still, I want to push it to at least 2.7 or 2.8 ghz and I still need to know which temp reading software I should trust. And while I'm at it, what would you say is the maximum safe core temp? I know Intel says something close to 85 degrees, but that isn't exactly a temperature one can run safely and stable... Razz I'm thinking 65 degrees should be safe and anything over it would be bad in the long run?

I use coretemp and it's vista gadget...

I emailed him recently asking if he has plans on GPU support in the future and he said he's currently working on it.

Weird your getting different temp readings, I ran speed fan and coretemp at the same time see if there were a different between apps and the only difference I got was the refresh lag but they were both pretty much the same

the problem with the different temps is related to the tjunction.
Every Program out there reads the temp difference to tjunction, not absolute temps.

You can adjust this in the options - both progs will most likely show the same values.

If you are not sure about what actually IS the tjunction for your cpu -> google it! Smile

You don't have to worry about temps if you haven't increased the voltage.

Overclocking will shorten the CPU life no matter what. 65 degrees sounds reasonable though.

In my opinion RealTemp is by far one of the best for intel based processors!

Love this proggy, good news that he's working on a GPU monitor as well (and thanks for the heads up about it). ^_^
