IRC to be monitered by a university funded by the C.I.A. to "silently listen" for terrorist chatter. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19889

Like the article suggests, seems like a convienent way to snare downloaders, under the guise of "listening to potential terrorist chatter" Rolling Eyes I knew it would come to an end sooner or later.

And heres the original story http://news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39175016,00.htm

Linknet uses ssl anyway, so it won't be easy for them to monitor it and it is impossible for them to monitor private networks aswell.
But what has this to do with games?

jonels look at the alternatives:

BT is slow (extremely, usually around 10kb/s for me)
Kazaa doesn't even get a worthy mention.
DC is hard as hell to find anything, plus slow as shit.

If they 'silently listen' on irc, and they find 'terrorists', what are they going to do?

OK it really doesn't take a genius to figure out that these are all P2P programs and that how "fast" they are is entirely dependent on WHO you are connected to.

In my experience, BT has always gone between 40 and 200k/s
and DC++ has gone between .8 and 10 megs per second. not the smaller one. actual megabytes. per second. really slow aye Wink genius...

True, but BT can be fast. I downloaded pirates at a average speed of 150 kb/s this morning. Thats a pretty nice speed. It depends on the tracker you're using and the people that are uploading.

DC has one complaint from me - it's impossible to find what you want. Sure, you can connect to a few hubs and search, but unless you have 3TB of shared information and 500 slots on a dedicated quad-T3, you're not likely to get a decent hub that has these things. Which is the reason I complain about it.

As for FTP, "thank god" aplies to the 1% that has access to a good 0day ftp. The other 99% of us are still left in the shit here.

The movie industry has tried to do this before, there is almost no chance it will pass, and if it does, it's not controllable, so it will just be another pointless law, not a "draconian dictatorship"...

This is scary? how about the FBI wanting EVERY single application that accesses the internet in ANY WAY to be REQUIRED to have a built in back door for the FBI to snoop for "terrorist activity"? now that was scary. I'm not sure if it got rejected yet though, but haven't heard about it for a while so I'm assuming it did... phew...
