There's nothing quite like it, you could check out the X series (the latest, Terran Conflict has a thread about it on the first page here), but it's not entirely the same so you might hate it.

If you aren't averse to multiplayer, the Discovery mod for Freelancer is pure awesomeness:

i fear that x terran conflict has too much economics and micromanaging?!

what exactly does the discovery mod?

The only game that could possibly equate to Freelancer (though, obviously, nowhere near as epic) would be Darkstar One. The X series is more of a simulation than Freelancer, while DSO is more arcadey.

DSO was kinda gay tho, I didn't even bother finishing the campaign. And yeah that's precisely the reason some people don't like the X series pfeiffchen - the discovery mod adds a shitload of new ships, systems, factions, weapons etc. pretty much every aspect of the basic Freelancer is expanded upon. The trick is that it doesn't really support the campaign mode, so you can either play in open singleplayer (boring as hell) and on one of the Discovery servers. I've only played on the 'official' Discovery server, and while there's quite strict rules about RP and such (you can roleplay a pirate, mercenary, military, trader and so on) it can be great fun.

I'd say I-war 2 . It's a bit older but still has great graphics, tons of mods and a great story.

Starlancer? Didn't play it but I think I've read looooooong(cat) time ago that it had quite similiar gameplay.

**EDIT**

Nah, forget what I've just wrote. It's not the same. It's more like Wing Commander.

yeah starlancer is nothing like freelancer, but I still loved it. great campaign with some very unique missions.

unfortunately I also don't know of any other good games like freelancer.
there's 2 or 3 like darkstar one but they aren't too good. they just don't come close to freelancer.

the x games are very different from freelancer. the focus is on trading and managing stuff and it's really a sandbox game with a forgettable story and mediocre missions. it's also not very user friendly while freelancer was really easy to get into. at least x3: terran conflict has (optional) mouse aiming similar to freelancer's.

i never really got into the X games, its sandbox porn without much story to speak of really. Darkstar One was the closest to Freelancer yet. The gamedevs should stray from their standard 3rd or 1st Person Shooter formula and make a kickass space opera already. Im still waiting for that Tie Fighter/Xwing remake. Very Happy

One of my alltime favorite is still I-WAR 2, if the dated gfx dont put you off, you should give it a try. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/independencewar2edgeoc/review.html

Starlancer was the game before Freelancer as i remember it, but it they are very diffrent and as i understand not really in the same "universe". Anyways Freespace 1 & 2 are masterpieces aswell when it comes to story progression in spacecombat games.

Another vote for I-war2. Awesome game.

As close to realistic physics as it can get while still begin fun, pretty complex (while avoiding being complicated at the same time), pretty good story, awesome missions, and great pirating.

There is nothing quite like killing off the whole escort of a super freighter and then callig Jaffs to haul all that cargo to the base.

What's missing is is more complex trading and more usable ships. Otherwise, great game.

Evochron Legends

http://starwraith3dgames.home.att.net/evochronlegends/index.htm

A lot more accessible than X3, it reminded me a lot of FreeLancer when playing. It's a web download game, not sure if there is a release out, but there is a demo to check out the game for 60 minutes I think.

freespace 2 rocked, but i sure dont remember that one being arcadey... i remember that one having a pretty hefty amount of keyboard controls. yeh, fucking epic game though... i remember the first time i saw one of those massive ships coming in through a wormhole... never see anything so fucking massive in a game before, it blew me away... final mission was freakin sweet too.

For Freespace 2 you should try FS2Open, its FS2 with a shiny new engine.

I-War 1&2 were amazing games, the developers got bought later on and the new company got scraped Sad another one bites the dust, Brits really know how to make games (hint - new Batman game).

Bought that one (OMFG). But it's shallower than it looks, and the storyline campaign sucks balls. Embarassed

FreeSpace 2 Open looks awful even with the graphics mods... Mad Even a game like Nexus The Jupiter Incident, which is a RTT game, looks hell of a lot better than FSO. Sad

Dude, Freelance and EVE-Online are both set in space, the comparisons end there. (I like both)

Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.
