i don't have a strong enough nostalgia for the 90s to be able to get too excited about a tarantino movie. he was cool for his time, now he just looks anachronistic, a vestige of the glorious past when "being cool" was still cool.

i enjoyed his earlier movies, by which i mean reservoir dogs and four rooms(yeah, i know he only directed a segment). pulp fiction was cool too, but it seems dated now (unlike rooms and dogs) and it managed to cross into a different territory after a while, when all the cool kids started liking it, when it became the object of worship of the typical barfly people with mediocre iq, it started losing it's shine.

with jackie he tried something different and was only partly successful. there weren't too many cool characters, but more understated types and the dialogue was more mundane. considering that his movies are about style and cool characters, that wasn't such a wise choice.

kill bill 1 was flashy, OTT and mostly funny, as opposed to kb2 which turned out to be a snooze fest full of sparkless dialogue.

with deathproof i get what he was trying to do, but he emulated the 70s horror movies a bit too well. all the boring passages that made up 90% of a horror movie back then are intact in deathproof too. the dialogue is self-indulgent and drags on forever. a chilled-out banter about hamburgers works when the characters are stylish hitmen, but when you put the same sort of lines in the mouths of braindead bimbos, it becomes annoying, just like listening to a dumb bitch talking shit in a real-life bar.

i hope he manages to get back his sense of self-mockery and that little bit of naivity that he had in the beginning and that made his movies so likeable, without them coming off as something made by a full of himself hipster that knows he's cool and feels the need to show off every chance he's got.

tl;dr version: tarantino needs to find out where he left his heart. without that, coolness is just off-putting and never likeable.

The acting by Brad Pitt looks shitty.

Oh and it should've been based in Yugoslavia or EE instead of France. Then we could talk about true brutality Twisted Evil But oh well, this is good too Very Happy

Movie is just awesome, a typical Tarantino movie. A lot of brutal scenes, log dialogs etc. Brad and Christoph Waltz made a fantastic performance.

Absolutely worth watching.

When should the soundtrack be released?

Well, this contains moer spoilers than I intended. So if you haven't seen it and don't like spoilers you better skip everything but the last paragraph.

[spoilers be starting here]

So. I've just seen it and I'm somewhat reluctant to say it was awesome.
Well, it was awesome but repellent at the same time.
I could go on and on about certain scenes and why they were as disturbing to me as they were (which, I'm pretty sure, was intended by Tarantino)
Just this one.
The Basterds laughing at Donnie beating the Nazi officer into a pulp and the Nazis laughing at Zoller killing over 300 americans in the cinema.
What does that tell me about the Basterds? Or yet better. What does that tell me about myself? There were a couple scenes containing killings that I laughed at myself.

There were a couple of things that I didn't quite get.
One thing is: Why did Stiglitz kill like 13 (or something around that) Nazi officers? They never explained his intentions although I'm inclined to believe he was just crazy.
Just look at him before and in the scene in the basement bar.
Another thing I didn't get at first (but have now after rethinking some scenes) is how Frederick Zoller snapped at the end when Shosanna basically told him to go fuck himself.
If you look at it closely enough he had those tendencies all along (just take a look at how he had Shosanna be picked up)
Well whatever.

Seems a lot of the "controversy" (read the last paragraph for a couple of words regarding my usual imdb.com visit) is spawned and fueled by americans.
Do I watch a movie that is settled in WW2 different because I am German and we still get told to feel some sort of collective guilt for the atrocities Germany commited?
Don't get me wrong but to me it feels as if I can watch a movie like Inglorious Basterds more "distantly" than some (mind my words _some_) of the american audiences.
(Again, just read through some comments on imdb if you will)
In conclusion I think I'll have to watch the movie several times until I can fully grasp what I see, what might have been intended with it etc.

[spoilers be ending here]

Btw. so I was, like many others, wondering about the title and it seems somebody asked Tarantino and he answered:
"Here's the thing. I'm never going to explain that. You do an artistic flourish like that, and to explain it would just take the piss out of it and invalidate the whole stroke in the first place."
Me: Laughing
And I did not get Tarantino's cameo apperance(s) I had to look them up at imdb Very Happy
And then I did what I always do after seeing a new movie:
Visit imdb.com. Man are their boards troll filled. It's so ridiculous it's not even funny anymore. Well it is, kinda, but kinda sad too.
I saw threads going from "This movies is propaganda" (which was a thread filled with some conspiracy bullcrap couldn't be arsed to read it) to "tarantino used nazis to hide his psychopathology" (because Tarantino's just a sadistic prick who likes people to suffer) to "Were the Inglourious Basterds really any better than the Nazis?" which started out quite nicely written and thoughful and then turned into a troll bash-party ("did you expect something different?".... shut up naggin part of my brain!)

Oh well this went on much longer than intended...

edit: indeed a very good review by Spoony

errr people praising this movie cause its tarantino need to shut up as well. he's not the greatest. he makes flaws. don't treat him like a genius. seriously.

there are trolls for every movie... but being an ass about there being trolls for a tarantino movie... jesus. it's just a movie. only thing going for it is the gore. tarantino lost his touch. he's arrogant. he's a fuck job. and the only good thing he's for is writing the word nigger and getting away with it. his dialouge stopped being awesome. like blaaaah.

any egotistical arrogant director that claims the torture gore filled japanese films are masterpieces... seriously needs to shut the fuck up and focus on making a decent movie.
