First review:
Quote: | Nier's real charm comes in unlocking the whole story, like it was with Drakengard. "My first impression was that the controls are comfortable, your companions both eccentric and deeply portrayed, and the story packed with elements of parody," he wrote. "I thought it all mixed together into a very quaint and charming package. That was all blown away once I viewed all of the endings -- you definitely want to see them for yourself; nothing like it's been done in gaming." |

Aye, there are two versions (Replicant and Gestalt) but they are essentially the same.
Gestalt is basically the Japan-only version and is exclusive to the 360 - the game we'll all know and play is Replicant, just titled "NeiR", and is on both 360 and PS3. They're both the same game with minor differences about the main character.

You need to get up to date, as Sabin1981 rightly mentioned the new name is NIER for the UK/US markets, if you'd read Friday's press releases you'd know that or just clicked on the official website link rather than Wikipedia.......

So is this action adventure, action RPG or J-RPG? I'm confused. From the first trailers it looked like a DMC/GoW action game, now I hear it's got RPG in as well... and allies+party!
May I say "What The F"?

Early release? Nice. The game looks very bland, but maybe will give it a chance.

Looks Like it's Heavenly Nier May Cry because of Bayonetta's Sword in Dante's Inferno. May be good then.

It's a very interesting game, when I first installed it I was like "oh no" its initial graphics reminded me of the worst type of cheap generic crap, using two-tone blends of grey and brown.
The developers were having a joke on us all, Nier soon opens up with a full colour pallet and surround sound audio.
Be warned however, the majority of the game's structure is not introduced until after three hours of a very shallow learning curve, which may seem repetitive, stick with it if you can.
The game play is reminiscent of Onimusha/Devil May Cry but with much deeper action/rpg overtones set in a English/Germanic middle ages environment and even has Kameo elements, a game that has yet to be repeated in it's design complexity.
The layout/landscapes resemble Shadow Of The Colossus.
It includes farming, fishing and item customization with even the ability to assign power words to weapons plus many dedicated side missions providing the essential weapons, items and magic upgrades we all know and love.
The starting village tells me quite a lot, it is filled with people, all going about their daily lives and with something to say relevant to you and your missions.
The buildings, scenery, bridges, stairways and shops were all designed thoughtfully and with a mind to create a living, breathing location.
The weather system is changeable, setting out early in the morning on a sunny day is nice and bright with suitable shadows until you step into shade whereby tendrils of early morning mist creep up your legs while fog sits in pools to break apart as you move through it.
16/4/10
The more I play Nier the more I am reminded of Shadow Of The Colossus graphically in that both games have huge beautiful detailed structures and buildings balanced by generic landscapes that you run through.
By the time you leave your home to travel to The Lost Shrine you start to get an idea just how deep the game is, game play element after element is slowly introduced, taking what was essentially a tiny seed that looked basic to the uninitiated branches out into what could be a serious and heartfelt successor to Drakengard.
Down sides:
1: The game engine does have some aliasing artifacts but nothing that derails the game.
I'll be interested in seeing whether the PS3 version produces the same problem.
Found a video that displays the in-game engine and shows you the artifacts:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/uk-darkening-nier/64465
2:Some doors don't work at the start but please don't think the structures are generic, they all have particular features and open up after chapter two.
More to follow.
