When I have it plugged in, the battery charge just stays at 99% and keeps showing the charging light. This started happening today. Any idea on whats wrong?

The battery may got dry. Pour some water on it. But be careful, not more than half a glass.

You say that, but you probably don't remember he tried cleaning his mom's laptop with water and ruined the screen... He was then afraid she'd kick his ass!
So to be clear for TC01, NO, DON'T DO IT, DON'T PUT WATER ON THE BATTERY !!!

I think what leo is trying to say, pour it directly on the notebook, as this may reduce the temperature and increase the "energy-flow".

No really TC, there is nothing to worry about
Actually it's not so good to have the battery in the computer when it is charged and you're connected to another power source.

@TC01, to step out of character for a moment, let's try something serious.
Try completely discharging the battery. Let Windows run for as much as possible, it will shut down when the battery is low enough. Then just boot it and go into the BIOS. Let it stay like that until PC shuts itself. Now try charging the battery while the laptop is off. See if that helps.

Damn I tried draining the battery all the way and letting it charge fully but now it stops at 96% instead of at 99%. I guess the battery is just getting old. I got this laptop in like January 2009

Eh, 1 year for a laptop battery is not that much at all actually. Check if you are not still under guarantee.

Li-ion batteries don't need to be decharged and then recharged. If you use up too much power of a lithium-ion battery (discharge them past the safety shut off) you will actually damage them.
That cycling is for other types of batteries which aren't used much anymore, especially not in consumer electronics.

Yea its a li-ion battery. Nothing was working and draining the battery seemed to make it worse (from 99% to 96%) so I figured there was no way of going back to 100% and the battery would just keep charging forever which would be pretty bad as well.
So I removed the battery from the laptop and used the laptop all day yesterday and today with just the AC power cord. But since I have class tomorrow morning, I figured I would insert the battery back in and charge it so I can use it tommorow. For some reason it charged all the way to 100% this time and then stopped charging
Hopefully this isnt just 1 lucky break. Even if the battery drains faster, I just want the charge to reach/display 100% because otherwise it will never stop charging unless I physically remove the cord

lol if it happened in summer 2008 then I was 21. But its not like I dumped the thing into a bucket of water. I used wet soapy paper towels. The problem was they were too wet and the water leaked into the sides of the screen.
Id be lying if I said I didnt wash THIS laptop with soap as well lol but now Im very very careful when I do this. No water leaks anywhere and everything gets fully clean You would be cleaning your laptop with soap too if a friend, who had vaginal blood on her fingers, was using it
