Referring to this thread : here

I noticed the whole topic was flying under the wing and after i saw what its about i think it's right to put this again in the spotlights. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people out here like me who leave their computer running day and night. Wouldnt it be great to sacrifice your unused resources to find a cure for cancer and/or other horrible diseases ?

I bet it does !!

How can we see this as a game ?
After entering your contribution to society will be recorded. Simply follow this link to see the current ranking.

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=162988

I'm sure we can do better then this !!

How to enter this competition and off course help society ?

Download your software : Here
Team Number : 162988
Username : should be obvious

How does this effect my computer ?
It only uses the resources what are currently unused. This won't effect your gaming, don't worry.

Current Rank :
Team Ranking (incl. aggregate) 11769 of 173708

Find me a game where the research is about making cancer airborne and highly contagious, and I'll run my computer on it 24/7.

Bah it was funny. Sad

No I'm actually in three different teams already, I just don't run it as much as I could/should. Still definitely worth signing up for anyone who keep their comps idling overnight.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

As for this folding@home bullshit? No, count me out. I'm not using MY computer cycles to help some fucking fat-cat pricks at some random pharmaceutical company get rich off a cure for whatever ailments they have us computing on. Anyone thinks they're really doing some good in the world is just deluding themselves.

All you're doing is helping to make rich fucks even richer. Worse is that there won't be a cure, if anything you're helping to develop a TREATMENT that will cost millions to actually use, and who pays? The people that NEED the treatment. No, I won't be a part of that.

Don't know how much you read about it and I don't know how true that is but I have no reason to not believe them when they say:

Quote:
Who "owns" the results? What will happen to them?

Unlike other distributed computing projects, Folding@home is run by an academic institution (specifically the Pande Group, at Stanford University's - Chemistry Department), which is a nonprofit institution dedicated to science research and education. We will not sell the data or make any money off of it.

Moreover, we will make the data available for others to use. In particular, the results from Folding@home will be made available on several levels. Most importantly, analysis of the simulations will be submitted to scientific journals for publication, and these journal articles will be posted on the web page after publication. Next, after publication of these scientific articles that analyze the data, the raw data of the folding runs will be available for everyone, including other researchers, here on this web site.

Yeah I'd sign up for a nfohump rpg where you explore the forums magically changed into a 3d landscape then visit all the nfo subscribers to receive quests and pearls of 'wisdom' from them.....heh.

Alot of Uni's worldwide have access to the Folding@Home database afaik. But I still wouldn't leave my PC running at 100% CPU load 24/7, people don't seem to realise that shit can cost alot of ka-ching. I find it weird that governments banning fucking lightbulbs don't stand against this.

I wouldn't do it either but when my PC is running and I'm not doing anything but surfing or downloading shit I have no problem letting f@h run in the background.
I wouldn't let it run like 24/7 just for f@h because that would be... stupid? O.o

I know some people with dedicated 'servers' just for Folding or SETI, weird bastards. People actually buy $500 PC's just so they can be numero uno.

I don't like games that don't have a definitive ending. That's why I hate MMORPGs. Very Happy

Like this? Very Happy

Quote:
The player begins the game in one of the six origin stories which serve as an introductory point for the players and present the world from their personal point of view. The origin story chosen (the choices being Hardcore PC Player, Casual PC Player, Hardcore Console Player, Casual Console Player, Lurker and Noob) determines who the character is and how NPCs react to the player. For example, console players are often viewed as second class citizens.

After completing their character's respective origin story, the player encounters TheSaint, leader of an elite group known as the Moderators. TheSaint guides the player to their destiny of becoming a Moderator, a group who dedicate their lives to the banning of the Trolls, a force of annoying creatures that live underground and have at various points in history swarmed the Forums in movements known as AAA game releases, or Blights.

The player and TheSaint journey to a fortress called Moderator Area in southern NFOHump, to join Rinze, the King of NFOHump, and Lutzifer, a legendary general and friend to Rinze's father. There they plan to make a stand against the encroaching Trolls, who TheSaint believes have gathered for the first true AAA game release in 3 months. TheSaint has sensed the influence of an Archtroll, a great being hosted in the body of a powerful spammer, in the Trolls' actions, making a Blight possible.

Rinze ordains the player into the Moderators in a dangerous ritual called the Joining. Afterwards, the player, along with another Moderator, Epsilon, is then given the task of closing new registrations at the top of the forum in order to signal Lutzifer to charge. After fighting through many trolls that have infiltrated the forum, the player does this, but Lutzifer, upon seeing the signal, quits the field with all of his men. King Rinze and TheSaint die along with most of the army at the hands of the Trolls, who take control of the Moderator area and southern NFOHump. Lutzifer goes to NFOHump's capital city, VIP Area, and proclaims himself regent for Queen Pistolshrimp, his daughter and Rinze's widow.

The player and his party are nearly killed by the Trolls as well, but they are saved by Jenni, a powerful witch who lives in a secluded hermitage. Jenni presents the player with the involuntary assistance of her daughter and apprentice, Timechange01. The player, along with Epsilon and Timechange01, decide that in order to slay the Archtroll believed responsible for the Troll uprising and put an end to the Blight, a new army must be gathered from a myriad of factions located in the NFOHump area, which the Moderators have treaties with.

After the player successfully encounters and obtains the assistance of the Console Players of the Console Arena, the PC Players of the Kingdom of PC Games Arena, the Circle of Lurkers and Noobs, and most importantly the uncle of King Rinze, Mod [sYn] of Redcliffe, a meeting known as the Landsmeet is called between all the VIPs of NFOHump at VIP Area, during which NFOHump's political unrest is settled and the forum is ready to face the Trolls in The Useless Void.

At this point, the player learns that a Moderator must personally ban the Archtroll, sacrificing his or her mod rights in the process; the player chooses between self-sacrifice, sacrificing either Epsilon or Lutzifer depending on which is available as a result from the choices made in VIP Area, impregnating Timechange01 with a child that would capture the Archtroll's essence or convincing Epsilon or Lutzifer to impregnate Timechange01 with the same result. Regardless of the choice, the player's party reaches Useless Void and force a final confrontation with the Archtroll atop the Epic Thread. The Archtroll is banned, causing all of the other Trolls to flee.

Yeah class Smile
Hmm, I wish there were dual class characters though Inz, I'd choose hardcore pc/console player with a race stat of keyboard+1.

Nfohump game... Meh. I saw that and thought that the admins were contemplating on adding a forum RPG. Now that would make the hours we spend here a bit more interesting.
