so i am looking into buying a new monitor to replace the 17" samsung i have atm (it was pretty awesome back in its day though!). now i wanna go somewhere between 21.5" to 24" widescreen, whatever i can get the best deal on. there are some pretty decent deals i can get but they are all full hd (1920x1080 resolution) monitors and i am thinking, since i dont upgrade my hardware that often, if i should go for a lower resolution (1680x1050) instead. the logic behind that being, that in a while my c2d e8500 and hd5770 wont be able to perform as well as i would want them on a high resolution like 1920x1080 and i might get better performance out of them at 1680x1050 a year/couple of years down the line.

so what im asking is, what do you guys suggest, should i get the full hd (higher resolution=prettier picture) or the lower resolution one (safer bet to run games on down the line)? i think its pretty evident im on a budget (student etc) so keep that in mind

Huh.. Just get a full HD. You can always lower the resolution if you need to and still keep the 16:9 aspect ratio.

yeah, i realise that, but i was worried about running things in non-native resolution. because for example right now my native is 1280x1024 and when i turn to 1024x768 it just looks awful.

1024×768 is 4:3

1280x1024 is 5:4

So yeah, it could look a bit odd.

any monitor type with fixed pixels will be 'jaggy and blurry'
the pixel technology doesn't matter
you'll need a crt if you want smooth resolution independence

but modern screens have pretty good quality scaling algorithms and lower resolutions do look pretty damn good when you concider it's a non-native resolution - like a 1-pixel blur

thanks, i cant believe that in all those years i hadnt noticed the aspect ratio difference between the resolutions. going to go with the full hd one, i can get a good deal on a samsung p2270 so thats what im gonna get. seems to get pretty good reviews, and fits into my budget.
