Which would give me better perfomance a 2nd GTX 295 for quad SLI or an ATI HD5970?

No, for Crysis actually.

The thing is, I can get Crysis to run very smoothly @35fps on 1920*1080 enthusiast.

But with no AA, the moment I turn on AA, I got all sorts of stuttering and frame dropping and artifacts.

I want to be able to run Crysis, which is probably the greatest resource consumer out there, with 16x AA turned on with the same kind of smothness I get without AA.

I've read some articles saying that the 5970 also can't handle Crysis with 16x AA.

It's not that I play it a lot, it is just a sort of show off for every time someone visits Laughing

Can't go much more visually stunning than Crysis.

In your opinion would 2 ATI 5970 working on crossfire able to handle it flawlessly?

EDIT: I was always convinced that Nvidia was better than ATI, a break on the trend now?

5970 is tons faster than a GTX295, so if anything can handle it, it'll be the 5970. But 16xAA is nonsense anyway, I'd stick to 4-8. I personally use 4xAA as the difference from 2xAA is noticeable, but higher I won't notice whilst actively playing Smile

Not sure how the 5970 in crossfire would do, haven't actually bothered to look at any benchmarks of that yet

Edit: NVIDIA hasn't been faster for a while now. The 5870 keeps up with the 295 in a lot of games and situations, and a cheap setup like 2x5850 generally beats it by quite a bit. Add in the fact that ATI is a lot cheaper and consumes less power, and you've got a winner! Smile

I guarantee the 5970 will handle Crysis, with or without AA, better than the GTX295 - or even two of them Very Happy Hell, a single 5870 goes against the GTX295 in most cases ... so having the 5970 (effectively two 5870s at once) is just insane overkill.

However, since you've already got a GTX295, best off doing some research.

That's just with one 5970 vs a GTX295. I think the results speak for themselves Very Happy

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-5970,2474-8.html

That's Crysis with, and without, AA. At 8xAA the card stomps the living crap out of the GTX295. Of course that's just one GTX295 and you're considering adding another, but is QuadSLi optimised enough to make much of a difference?

A single 5970 runs Crysis with 8xAA and absolutely max settings, getting 52.9fps at 1680x1050 and 44fps at 1900x1200. The GTX295 only gets 36fps at 1680 and 29fps at 1900x1200.

That's a sizable jump Very Happy

And yes, nVidia were in the lead with the 8-series and then the GTX-280, but ATi pulled a gold-plated rabbit out their hat with the 48xx and 58xx series. The 58xx/59xx are just STUPID powerful.

Money isn't an issue, I just want a configuration that can handle those hungry games on max with full AA with a steady 40+fps.

I've seen it, thanks Very Happy

I think I'll go for the 2 ATI 5970 Crossfire config, anyway, now that I am upgrading, what are the best CPU's on the market right now.

I got an i7 920, and although I never seen this baby on 100% usage with anything I do, I think it's a bit outdated ain't it?

Jesus H... you're going for TWO 5970s!? Holy Mary Mother of GOD... Uhhhh yeah, you're not gonna need upgrading for any game for quite some time! Shocked

As for the i7? Nope, it's most definitely not outdated. Nothing touches it (GTA4 maybe) and should keep you going for TIME. Of course, since you've got your own money tree out in the back garden, which you routinely set fire to just for fun, then you could always buy the i9 when it hits Laughing

Not much can use quadfire, you'd really be better off with a 5970 and a single 5870, tests shows this setup in many cases, but not all though difference is neglible, gives better fps than quadfire.

I wouldn't say hard, if you are looking for something hard I would suggest the M4M section on craigslist Laughing

It's boring, monotonous and it will consume the greatest percentage of your free time Wink
