Yes.

Definately better than most RPGs coming out today, I especially liked the second chapter. Although all the Avernum games have massive sandboxy worlds and an enormous array of sidequests, the second chapter is one of the few games I know of where inaction has consequences (cities get destroyed if you do nothing). There's also some degree of choices and consequences, but Geneforge (the other RPG series by the same developer) is better in this regard.

Also, it should be noted that Avernum games are sorta remakes of the old Exile series: never played those but supposedly they are even better.

Exile series was great but I don't think that it's still playable today. It's surely outdated.
I couldn't switch myself to Avernum with all the changes. But yeah it's quite good in terms of cRPG nowadays.

The first three Avernums are remakes of the Exile series, but 4 - 6 are brand new.

I'm less than thrilled with the latest installment...it feels a little too disorganized. I think I have to start over and *read everything* to really enjoy it. I love the tactical combat, but reading several paragraphs from every minor NPC who might give you a quest gets a little tedious. And there are no big dungeons early on that you can get into and enjoy.

I think Exile III remains my favorite; the Exiles had that immensely satisfying Fireball spell that would obliterate a group of goblins with a series of *boom* *SQUEEAK!*

But yeah, it's hard to recommend the Exile series now. It's so dated, it's 16-bit and just won't run on 64-bit Windows.

Jeff says his next projects are a brand-new series and a remake of Avernum...I expect he'll redo the whole series for a third time. Worth watching for in the next couple years.
