I've got Half-Life 2 installed from the Vengeance DVD release. I've also got the file 'half-life source.gcf' which contains all the data for the remake of the first game, Half-Life Source
I can run this file by putting it in the same folder as the rest of the GCFs and running it using a shortcut on the desktop similar to the one that the Vengeance installer creates for Half-Life 2.
Under Target, the following command is entered:
"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\User\Half-Life 2\hl2.exe" hl2.exe -steamlocal -game hl1
And Half-Life Source loads. However its buggy. When playing from the beginning the credits don't appear, the voice doesn't speak, and a flashlight is floating in midair where someone is meant to be holding it.
So i extracted all the files from the GCF into the Half-Life 2 folder and now it works.
However this is a redundancy of data as i've got the game once in the GCF file and again in the folder where its extracted. Half-Life 2 has just 40mb-ish of files extracted and it works, streaming the rest of the data from the GCFs. There must be a way of doing this with Half-Life Source, i just have no idea which files to use. Removing the GCF file doesn't work, as it complains that it's missing. Extracting all the files means the game works, but when you go to new game, each chapter to start on is listed twice, so some data is being unnecessarily repeated.
Can anyone help me with this? I've spent hours playing around with it and got nowhere. Vengeance has made their Steam emulator compatible with Half-Life Source (it mentions it in the ini file), but their installer does not activate it. I hope they release an installer for it, or a release of the whole game.

extract client.dll and server.dll from the bin folder in the HL Source GCF file with GCFScape , put those two files in the steamapps\user\half-life2\hl1\bin folder.
