  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

    The Veep's got your back!

As the newly elected Vice President of the World, you return to your rural hometown for some rest and relaxation... only to stumble upon a series of oddities which all lead to one logical yet difficult-to-prove conclusion: Something's definitely up!
You immediately spring to action (after your morning coffee, of course), enlisting the aid of your constituents to help investigate the strange occurrences and save the world! Your quest will take you across deserts, forests, cities, mountains, casinos, and even a retirement community, as you battle mutants, overthrow a puppet government, snorkel for buried treasure, and... if there's time... grab a well-deserved refill on your coffee!

Ask not what you can do for your countrymen,
Ask what your countrymen can do for YOU!

There are no NPCs in this world. Every single townsperson is recruitable, each with unique combat abilities and playstyles. And like a true politician, the Veep never needs to get his own hands dirty . . . not while he's got such a motley crew of constituents!
Every citizen also has a unique day job that levels up with use, whether it's selling goods to the party, altering weather patterns, piloting vehicles, pushing boulders aside, or synthesizing new items from your old junk!
This game is almost literally bursting at the seams with bonus content, hidden secrets, intriguing challenges, and much, much more!

I've been holding off on posting this for months since I know how completely NOT interested most PC humpers are with "JapCrap®" or jRPGs in general Razz Still, it's due out soon and it would be criminal to pass this up.. especially if you're fans of classic SNES RPGs like Earthbound - of which is a perfect homage to Smile It was on Kickstarter a while back and I backed it but, sadly, they didn't quite hit their target so the funding was cancelled. Eden still promised to keep on development and try to raise cash elsewhere.. and that's when Atlus stepped in, they paid for the entire development and even sprung for full voice acting too, as well as paying for ports to 3DS, WiiU, Vita and PS4. Atlus really kicked ass with this and now the game looks better than ever Smile There's a pre-alpha demo they put up on the Kickstarter which you can download and give it a try. You'll get an hour or two out of it and see how the combat works as well as the overall style of the game. There was a much larger demo made later as part of a public beta they were doing, adding the entire second chapter and increasing amount of recruitable party members from 5 to 21, but I've long since deleted the client and they shut down the Google Docs link it was hosted on. It's out in two months anyhow so the small demo should be enough Wink

Quote:
While we were all expecting roleplaying game (RPG) Citizens of Earth to release right about now, the indie titled picked up by publisher Atlus came about some last-minute delays. There is, however, a new release date locked in.

Regrettably for the impatient minds among us, Citizens of Earth is yet another game that passes up 2014 for a delay that goes into 2015. It will now release on January 20, 2015.

There is some good news involved with the announcement though. For one, Citizens of Earth will release both in North America and Europe at the same time.

Moreover, publisher Atlus will abide to fair regional pricing, with a tag of either $14.99 or €11.99.

Citizens of Earth has made it clear that it wants to polish up before its release. In a Facebook post, there’s an outline of three major issues.

On one hand, it wants to ensure players are given a balanced experience, which was unsure in a point in the game where quests can be done in an open order. In its extent, explanations for quests need improvements, as some were too vague.

Another issue appeared on the map, where players spend a lot of time. To prevent getting lost, these problems needed to be handled.

Especially fans of classic RPGs should look forward to Citizens of Earth. It takes a lot of inspiration from the iconic Earthbound series.

In this game, however, players portray a Vice President, who delegates fighting roles to recruited campaign supporters. People can be found in various locations and each one can be put to use in the party, after completing certain requirements.

Citizens of Earth will release for PC, Playstation 4, PS Vita, Nintendo Wii U and 3DS. There was originally a Mac version planned for the game as well, but the developer recently stated that it had no money left for a port.

Steam store page and system requirements added. No buy button yet but their price is already known; $14.99/€11.99/£9.99 -- oh and official demo is coming too, on all platforms. Atlus/Eden are really going all out on this and I truly hope it's successful Smile

Quote:
Citizens of Earth is a cleverly written, charming, and nostalgic game that is hindered only by repetitive combat combined with a high encounter rate. Those who see past the minor design flaws and few technical problems will find a strong EarthBound-inspired RPG that is entertaining from start to finish.

  • Concept:An exploration-heavy, retro-inspired RPG with a turn-based combat system and enjoyable writing
  • Graphics:Cartoony and charming, the art style is instantly appealing and calls back to the graphics found in many RPGs from the ‘90s
  • Sound:Each character has a unique set of four or five catchphrases that you hear multiple times during battle. Some of the areas of the world feature surprisingly good music
  • Playability:An interesting combat system and a diverse cast help make up for repetitive battles, but the high encounter rate discourages exploration beyond the critical paths
  • Entertainment:Humorous and fun, but a bit mundane at times. Retro RPG fans will find a lot to like
  • Replay:High

Score: 7.5/10

6/10 from IncGamers, they loved *and* loathed the game Very Happy The game is 90% combat and the reviewer particularly hated one scene in the game, on an Executive Retreat, where you have to slog through a maz *multiple* times to do the same thing. That sounds more than a little infuriating, I agree. They also point out an annoyance I have with Mystic Quest Remastered; when you gain an item from battle/chests, the notification stays on screen for 5 seconds.

Yikes. It irritated the fuck out of me in MQR, which had a lot less enemies and chests than this does.

Either way, this is the closing remark;

Quote:
But then it crashes to the desktop, or you try to ride your sea vehicle but it won’t spawn and the game locks up, or the combat text scrolls out of the window, or you come to an area or side-quest that has very clearly been designed to just waste your time. Citizens of Earth is a great game that’s simultaneously a terrible one, and I love it and hate it with equal passion. I haven’t been this angry at a game in quite some time, but when it’s not making me babble with incoherent rage, it’s making me smile with nostalgia and amusement.

Still want! So bad! Very Happy

Uh, what? Eden didn't "market" repetitive combat, that was the comment from Game Informer, not a sales point Neutral

Like every jRPG ever? Very Happy Final Fantasy V was particularly infamous for it, heh.

They loved it Very Happy Though they didn't really raise any complaints or criticisms, which is a shame as it's obvious the game *isn't* perfect, so not raising issues seems strange. Oh well.. roll on launch! Though I wasted the last of my cash on Cosmic Star Heroine, so I'll have to try and snag this elsewhere for now Smile

Also IncGamers put up a small strategy/tips page to help people with the game Smile
