[*]Release date: Q3/Q4 2010

http://www.justpushstart.com/2010/04/14/2k-games-announced-xcom-from-the-creators-of-bioshock-2/

Quote:

2K Games announced today the development of XCOM, a new first person shooter exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC. XCOM is currently being developed by 2K Marin, the studio behind Bioshock 2, which sold millions since launched. The game will be filled with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.”

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

XCOM will be available exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC. No release date are set but it is slated to come out this year. Check back with us later this week for more.

a new first person shooter

Well, that's sad and completely misses the components that made the X-Com franchise work.

[*]Genre: FPS

I have a ps3 for few months now, the first game i bought was Killzone 2. I dont usually play FPS games but I just had to try KZ2 with the hope that it would help me understand why people play fps games on console.

And I stopped after 30 mins, the control fuking sucks ass, how the hell anyone would prefer a controller over mouse/keybo when it comes to fps games?

for when every 5 new consoles game come out, there are like 2 or 3 FPS games. How the hell did that happen? why? whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?????????

Fuk this shit i need some Tekken time to release my frustration

So somehow in their "bright" mind of playing the old x-com games, they decided that this

=

I don't think they got the right idea. Its supposed to be a turn-based game similar to Fallout. Not some half-ass first person shooter that seems to be easier for them to make.

For some reason they decided that we were Fox Mulder. Might as well throw Scully in there as his sidekick/lover for some awkward moment sexual tension but never really get that close. And then half-way through we are sent after a killer that eats human livers.

Seriously 2k, give the rights to someone that knows what a X-COM is.

if they actually keep in all the elements of base maintenance, research and resource management, aswell as actively responding to dynamic threats, i'm all for it
closest we have to that now is warfare game mode in arma2
however i seriously doubt it

fallout3 worked (well, sort of anyway) because the originals were about the postapocalyptic alternative history, which could well be translated to other genres
xcom has always been about strong turn based tactical simulation
the setting with aliens is great and all but it all came down to the turn based tactics and managing your war against a superior enemy
if you just take the aliens and make it a shooter, it's just a shooter, no matter how xcomy they try to make it

There was a fps x-com project years ago (i think it was planned on the enhanced first Unreal engine) but it didn't make it.
I say that it's better to have a new x-com game, even if it's an fps.
If the devs could combine strategic maintenance of the X-com forces with fps action it would work. Of course without too much console-esque compromise Rolling Eyes

To be fair with 2K, this is not the first attempt to make X-COM a FPS. Hasbro was doing the same thing 10 years ago.

And there is also the X-COM: Enforcer.

What bright mind thought that putting an XCOM name on this FPS would help anything? It would be better they made a new franchise.

Obviously most of the mainstream have never heard of XCOM, and those who have heard of it and like it, will just be disappointed that it's an FPS.

I think they're using the name and that's it. The enemy wasn't exactly unknown in the original games Smile At least not that I remember. They're gonna fuck this one up like every other "re-imagining" they make. ugh

Yeah they should just make FPS games of every franchise with more than one game. To hell with actually making new ones and lets be too lazy to make up a new world/story/charaters.

While I am a fan of the original XCOM structure a new XCOM game won't hurt and maybe even help make the IP more readily apparent to a new generation of gamers.

Ofcourse I don't like them. Thats why I said they sucked bigtime.
They are nothing like the first Xcom. The first ones was really great despite its graphics (then again, had great graphics back when I played them...not just compared to todays standard). Infact, they are so great that I bought them all on Steam some months ago.

The ones you mentioned however, are just pale versions of the good ones. Anoying graphics and anoying games.

I think the FPS that got cancled would had been great (X-com Alliance). The serie did evolve toward a tactical FPS, but it has to have the orgininal X-com stuff like basebuilding and research. They managed to make a spacecombat game on the serie which was great, so there the serie could be made into a FPS too...maybe squadbased like SWAT or something?

But I think this might be more streamlined and just a ordinary FPS with X-come stuck to it's title...but I can hope....

I can read between the lines:

"To give you this suspensefull story, we have to sacrifice player freedom, so yeah, the game will be linear as shit."

Forget about research, base building, squad management of equipment and stats. Probably wont have destructible buildings. So no "dinamic entry".

But they will probably have hundreds of invisible walls. Tons of objects you cant interact with.
The world wont self destroy regardles of player's actions or inactions. Its not like the player will be able to roleplay the character he wants, he will be bound by the developer "character's role".

When will learn that people dont give a shit about roleplaying THEIR characters?

The game will probably have 6-12 hours of gameplay at most. No Online play or co-op as well. No open ended gameplay.

Not enough stuff to do or think, just another "blow stuff up" move on, wait for next encounter, "blow stuff up", move on, watch a scripted scene trying to scary you "blow stuff up", move on, blow more stuff, plant the bomb, watch the credits, humanity is safe.

Another thing. There was no FBI in XCom. I would better get a

"Alien mod invasion for GTA 4".
