If you go sidequests and chocobo breeding, it'll take you around 80 to 100 hours to finish it. If you only follow the story I'd say 40 to 50 hours is about right.

The music replacement (<3 Ficedula <3) and high-res visuals were what always made me love the PC version. Unpatched the PC version is a fucking disgusting mess that shouldn't even be pissed on .... but modded? Oh baby! Also, you could run FFVII in ePSXe and use the resolution upscaling feature - makes it look STUNNING compared to the original!
Spoiler:
Taken from my ePSXe config guide.
and
Sadly can't do anything about the backgrounds as they're prerendered
... oh and here's something that made me cry, because we'll never have anything like this

There are a bunch of hi-rez character (and enemy) models, as well as mods that adjust visual effects .. but not much in the way of a complete overhaul due to the game, PC and PS1 versions alike, using prerendered backgrounds.

Seems people are also working on replacing textures used in battle, too!
Or how about a Reactor fight scene?
Posted YESTERDAY, so the modding scene is very much ongoing and not a dead issue. Not bad for a game that is 13 years old The downside to the QHIMM site is that they specifically prohibit even TALKING about ripping assets from other games and injecting them into FFVII. It's a downside for two reasons;
1. QHIMM is the #1 FF modding site on the net. They're ridiculously active and have some of the finest FF modding talent on there.
2. There is so much more than can be done with FF7/FF8 PC, especially now that editing tools are available for most any platform. People were making mods for FF7/8 that ripped the gorgeous models and textures from, say, Dissidia or FFX, and injecting them into FF7/8. This looked GREAT, but QHIMM has banned even TALKING about it. It's bad because finding these kinds of projects is now becoming increasingly rare

Oh hellz yeah. I would SO play this if it was in English!
Wow those last screens from the reactor looks really good I must say.
So to understand this:
There are good gfx mods out there, but you can't find them because QHIMM forbids talking about it? Or are there mods still unfinished?
I really might want to play again if the complete game had overhauled backgrounds. Not to get me wrong, I really ADORE this game, but the fugly backgrounds are a huge turnoff, especially if you have a character gfx mod installed...

Most mods are ongoing projects, very few are final... and the really good ideas/mods for replacing models are hard to find, yeah. I don't really have any recommendations on mods to install as I've not tinkered with the PC version in a long time, but check out;
I have this game legally, and I played to the train graveyard and stopped because it was awful. Note: I tried playing it about 2-3 years ago for hte first time.

so you're like 30 minutes into the game and you gave up already?
Guys i fucked up. I had two characters dead and one nearly dead. Then i saved and after there was a boss. I lost and i restarted from the save but i'm again in the same condition and i have no potions or phoenixdowm. Am i ever gonna have a chance like that?
This game broke my heart! I was playing this when it first came out on the PC AND LOVING IT!! I got to the Chocobo races and it kept crashing on me. I tried everything to fix my problem from drivers to etc. I remember feeling like crack addict trying to get the next fix! LOL! I wasn't able to figure out what was up at that time so I moved on to another game. I regret never going back. I have heard nothing but fantastic things about this game. I tried playing FFVIII and it didn't have that magic that VII did. Also some of the magic sequences in VIII were so looooong, over and over. I was thinking about getting this from the PSN for my PS3. But if you can upgrade the textures and models I may end up giving this a try on the PC when that is all completed.

Yep FF VIII was pretty bad, there was more high-school emo melodrama and tedious micro-managing than actual gameplay.
If you don't want the hassle of making it run on PC, just use good old ePSXe

I would love to try FFVIII again, but all I can remember from that entire game is using a summon skill every single battle and falling asleep between the animations.
All I can remember is how pointless it was for your characters to fight when you can just summon and be done with it.
Spoiler:
I had made it to the part where you fly the ship into the tower thingy
