First Shadowrun Online newsletter is finally here!
Welcome to Cliffhanger Productions’ first ever newsletter for the upcoming Shadowrun Online game. This being our first official newsletter I apologize in advance for the less than glossy appearance and the fact, that it took us a while to even get one out.
Here at Cliffhanger Central we have been busy sticking it to the megacorps and trying to go solo on developing the game. So far we have gained at least enough creds to go into pre-production and will kick off our development next month. That being said – if any of you can spare a Million or two, we are happy to help you spend it. But until the money comes raining down on us, here are some answers to the questions we get asked the most:
So, what will Shadowrun Online look like?
Well, it will have a perspective camera in a 3D setting, much like our Jagged Alliance Online game, which we are currently developing. (for a peak at that one, you can go to http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/jagged-alliance-online-preview-a-classic-reborn-for-the-browser/ , who have the latest info from our gamescom version.) So, it will be a decent quality, but it won’t be what some call AAA. The reason for that is simple: We are doing a browser based game. This means anyone can access it at any time from their PC, no downloading, no hassle. But that also means we need to limit visuals. I hope you agree that gameplay is king, so we think the visuals are decent enough.
Here is a very early prototype (with even less visual quality) we did for Shadowrun to play around with camera angles…
What can you tell us about the game?
Well – not too much yet that is going to actually stay that way. Some of you may have followed the discussion we had over at the Dumpshock forum and we continue to get good input from fans. We have also secretly launched SHE – the Shadowrun High-Council of Elders, a group of current and previous editions writers and artists and Shadowrun alumni who have worked on the pen and paper game or had their hands in Shadowrun Mods or community work. They will make sure we don’t stray from the path of righteousness and continuity in adapting Shadowrun to the world of online games. We are going to work closely with Catalyst (American Shadowrun publisher) and Pegasus (German Shadowrun publisher) and may have some nifty surprises for you further down the line.
Enough already – what about the game?
The game will feature two major parts – the action map, where you (and your friends) do missions from stealthily infiltrating a secret Renraku research facility to punching the lights out of a major Aztechnology outpost with guns blazing. Hacking, magic and gunfights are all part of that and will be done simultaneously (so nobody needs to go for pizza while your hacker battles Black ICE for two hours).
The second part will be the legwork and mission preparation. This will happen on a city overview map, where you can try and use your contacts, skills or resources to gain info on the mission goal, acquire blueprints, bribe guards or prepare the right soft or spell for your endeavor. This will be closer to rolling the dice on an action and getting a short narrated outcome. Each of those actions will cost action points (and if you want to get better odds you may want to spend more action points on a specific objective).
So if you don’t have the time for an extended session, you may just want to spend a couple of AP to prepare and make sure you get the most out of your mission when you actually want to tackle it.
But I have a million more questions!
Of course there is much more to be said, but most of it is in a very early stage and we haven’t decided yet on how exactly we are going to do that. We are currently in full swing on our Jagged Alliance Online game, so thing are a little busy round here. But I promise we will give you more news as we progress.
In the meantime, why don’t you take a gander over to our Forum and ask questions there?
Until then, we will see each other in the shadows…
Primetide

This can't be even remotely close to the steaming turd that FASA dumped in our mouths. It could be a fucking FACEBOOK game and it wouldn't be as bad as FASA's arena shooter (though please, oh god please, don't make it a Facebook game). Colour me slightly interested.

I bet if it wasn't browser-based it would sell like fucking hotcakes. That looks exactly like my type of game. But I just want to play something like that single-player. If this wasn't a browser game I'd back it in a heartbeat. And, yes, I know it's got single player. Yeah, so does Diablo III. Not interested in a browser based online game. Other than that, it's fucking drool-worthy.
Honestly I'd be perfectly happy with a shadowrun game using a cleaned-up and optimized NWN1/2 engine. Good art, good writing, and I'm sold.
It'll be interesting to see how Shadowrun: Returns ends up being. They haven't released any screens have they?

A lot of projects are going on now since this thing (EDIT: With Kickstarter itself I mean.) took off quite well so I guess there's a bit of competition or how to say between the different projects, I guess though that they could re-design the project a bit, perhaps think through the different donation tiers some more and get interest up a bit and then try a bit later again with a new kickstarter campaign when things a bit more settled, just because it might not work this time doesn't mean they just give up would it?
I don't know how this works though, I'm also trying to save a bit of money this month but the project does look very good, hopefully if this works they can also fulfill their vision about how the game should be.
(With some feedback from the fans I guess, shouldn't add in ever single feature people are demanding of course.)

Plus I think for PC game projects people are a bit more demanding and critic, iOS projects to compare against something seems to work far quicker although there's been a number of successful projects for the PC software side as well.
(It must be very difficult to predict costs and setting up how much to actually ask for, not to mention once funded how to actually use said resources.)
(JB Gaming, third world slave labor - children welcome - and all software is pirated, yeah I think I could manage that part at least, marketing relations though are going to be quite difficult.)
(Right, last name is often used first for these types of things isn't it? forget it then.)

Well, you get the message.
This has been one of the truly most amazing, nerve-wrecking and wonderfully, magically special experiences we have had.
From the bottom of our hearts, we'd like to say THANK YOU to everyone, who has backed us so far. TO RC and SANGIUS. To Juliana and Antonius. To our great video crew who spent nights creating those amazing vids. To the team and MOST OF ALL TO ALL OUR BACKERS - those from the earliest days and everyone coming in just in time!
If we weren't working our butts off on our new game, we'd be dancing around the Closet (or tiny office) with tears of joy streaming down our faces. Instead, the team is heads-down at their computers, crying tears of joy and wiping their eyes with their shirt-sleeve.
To see all of you in action and moving this wonderful community forward...this is YOUR achievement. YOU have shown the world we can beat the odds - because us Shadowrunners are used to overwhelming odds - and we still succeed!
What now? we already have told you our stretch goal pledges if we made 500k and you just made them come true.
With 5 hours to go in this, we won't announce another stretch goal but here is another pledge:
EVERY Dollar above the 500k that the campaign ends with, WILL make Shadowrun Online that much better!!! We have more ideas for features, stories, content...plenty of good stuff that could make it into the game. YOU have amazed everyone, NOW THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!
|
3hrs to go and they've got $513k and still, slowly, going up. Well done to Cliffhanger for raising a successful Kickstarter for SRO!

tl;dr
Is this gonna be a browser-based game like JA:? Because then it's guaranteed to be shite.

It is a browser game, but it's unfair to say it's "guaranteed to be shite" without even playing it first. A short gameplay video was released a while back and it looked *very* fun, though I'm reserving my full opinion until I've seen more. However the developers do seem to realise what annoys gamers and what not to do;
Quote: |
SR PL: Some games limit the number of tries you have per day by using an ‘energy’ system to somehow counteract too much ‘mission grinding’. Will Shadowrun Online use anything similar?
Jan Wagner: No, we don’t believe this fits the core characteristic of our players. If you play through the whole game 24/7 straight for weeks, you can… But don’t forget to eat and drink!
SR PL: Do you have any plans or ideas to even out the playing field for people with seemingly endless gaming time and those with their gaming significantly limited by real life, so the latter do not feel second grade players and consequently lose interest in the game in the long run?
Jan Wagner: Well, actually this is typically something for the ‘free to play’ model (such as buying accelerators for bonus XP). On the ‘campaign’ server, I think the point that if I play PvE mostly, I am less worried about differences in progression speed. We have a system for making it viable for players with differing power levels to play fruitfully together, but this is yet to be tested properly.

Well, both JA:O and UFO Online are utter crap, so pardon me if I assume the same for this title.

It will be interesting to see how much this appears on Steam for next week. I was kind of interested in it after playing Shadowrun Returns but after watching that video, I do not think this company will be around much after the game is released unless it starts out as a F2P since they mention it as a mobile game too.

Early Access Game
Available: March 31st, 2014
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Out on Early Access now; almost no content at all, just a couple of combat maps with premade characters.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/267750/
€30 for standard, €39 for Founder's Pack and €49 for Deluxe Edition. -33% "launch" sale, so €21/28/35. Damned expensive for an online crowdfunded game :\
