I really didn't know where to put this, but hey wth grinhurt

I have excel table that looks like this:

So I want (or better yet, need) the formula that, when I change the firm of person1 for ex. so that he works in firm2 and not firm1 , will automatically change the number of people working in that firm in the B field under no. Of employees.

I haven't touched excel since high school, and even there we didn't do shit in excel grinhurt

You can use

=COUNTIF(B2:B4, "firm1")
=COUNTIF(B2:B4, "firm2")

It counts the number of times "firm1" appears between B2 and B4.

Leo is right although I would throw in a pull-down list with data validation in the variable field to avoid any input errors.

What you can do is add data validation to the fields to allow only "firm1" or "firm2" as valid values. This way it will not allow you to put "firm 1" by mistake and then wonder why calculations are not correct. Smile

You're supposed to be the resident physicist/evil-genius! That's the problem with the stupid 'ribbon' in MS Office these days. A large percentage of the people don't even see the rest of the program other than the default tab.

Anyway, if you click on the 'Data' tab and then 'Data-validation' then you should be able to see the relevant options. I would suggest making a list of the firms you would like to be able to choose from somewhere on your sheet. Then under data-validation select the option 'list' and you should be able to figure out the rest. Or pwerelds can always help you out with his lmgtfy links. Razz

Well it's so easy, took me literally about 30 seconds to get the correct answer with a step by step explanation
