So I'm a student (who would have guessed).
And I haven't got that much money to spend each month. Most of it I spent on necessities. ie. food, supplies for my studies etc. So I only have a rather small amount to spent on stuff (like video games). But if there's a month or two, or three that I can't afford to buy myself a game, I don't really mind (then again, I'm still able to pirate them Very Happy ).
I'm an avid reader so I go through a lot of books, really quick.
(btw. last books I read were the first 6 books of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, really fun to read).
So today I thought to myself "You gotta buy yourself a book or two!" (mainly the next to books of the Dresden Files Very Happy - yes I really enjoy them that much).
Before ordering I took a look at my bank statement and what did I see?
I can't even afford two books at 8,99€ each.
I haven't even got enough money to spend 20€ on books.
Fuck this shit, I hate being poor :/

I would but as much as I have to study right now (so that I actually get admittance to my exams and as to not fuck my studies up completely) I have no time for that.
If I had I'd had a part time job already.

I know what it means to go without. I did it for almost 10 yrs. My food was almost all veggies. I had to buy them from the 2nd hand bin, and cut the rotten stuff out. Eventually it changed.

I have huge respect for anyone who can go without!

Aslo i loved reading, Went to 2nd hand book stores.

I'm in the same situation, but I do have a bit more to spend due to occasional jobs here and there. With higher education you have very little time to sit back and relax, let alone take a parttime job. It's shit really. You work your ass off for a good degree, while the idiots selling weed and whatnot are enjoying themselves. Just wait when you have to repay that loan, fun times Very Happy

Mate, I can understand how you feel. Even though I never suffered scarcity in my studentship era I know how much being without enough money sucks. After my father died when I was 7, me and my mum lived by on our own for 4 years. It was tough, since with only one government officer salary it was hard to raise a kid in Turkey in mid 90's.

@PistolShrimp, you are one strong woman.

800€? Lucky sucker.
atm it's about 250€-ish per month but that' just because for now, I'm still living with my parents. When I move in with my gf in the next couple of months I'm gonna get around 400€-ish per month.
Which wouldn't even be enough to pay half the rent. Luckily my gf makes enough money so I don't have to pay half of it.
But yeah 250-ish atm. Subtract food, clothing and other random crap that's needed on a monthly basis (cell phone and other "small" stuff) it leaves me with about 40-60.
But some months, like may for example, leaves me with not even 20€ to my name.
And I'm not leading a very expensive lifestyle.

And if I'm completely unlucky and botch this semester as bad as it looks atm I won't be able to apply for my student loan next semster and than shit hits the fan :/

Dont worry. As soon as your done school, you will be making as much or more as your friends who didn't go to school and are making money now. I was so broke when in university and all my working friends had (What seemed like) a lot of disposable money. Now 6 years later im the one with the nicest car, paid off my house, looking at vacation properties while my working friends who didn't go to school are still living pay day to pay day.

Its a right of passage to live off student loans. Whats nice here in Canada, once you graduate, a lot of your loan in paid for by the gov.

be a bum for 5 years, get a degree and earn shitloads. Wink

I am not really rich, but the money I make as a starter is way more than someone without a degree. I am currently living on my own and can do whatever I want, eat whatever I want, be a little splurgie with buying things for some friends of mine on cafe and still have money left at the end of the month.

Yeah, when I was studying I had 50 euros /week for books/food/drinking/transportation/whatever. It makes you smart with money. Cut down on the big shit, enjoy yourself with small things.

I still have a stupid car, I still have a 'normal tv' (bigger than a 42 inch plasma, and only 299 euro), but I have steaks and champagne when I want it. No credit card debt, no car debt, and a good filled pension plan/stock portfolio. And no, I did not get it from daddy or mommy Wink

Daddy paid for my dormitory and the 50/week when i was in university, but in the summer months I had to be his free working slave... Doing painting, garden shit, chopping wood, building sheds etc.

The key, keep your life simple, dont get any debt, and learn to enjoy small things. I know people who were drinking champagne and bottles of wodka when they were studying. And they graduate with a 3000 euro debt @ the cafe. Well, that is plain retarded. Of course I enjoyed it when people offered it me, and then I thought, "Well thx a lot, but you are a stupid motherfucker" and I gave them a beer back.

Something similar here in Germany. It doesn't matter how much many I get in student loans, after I'm done I have to repay a maximum of about 10k€ (which still is a shitload of money that makes me really sick to think about :/) but at least I don't have to repay all of my loans which would be way more than that.

I know it really matters where you live in Germany... Living in the east is much cheaper than in the west, and Hamburg and Munich are the most expensive cities.

You can buy it from some foreign e-shop much cheaper I guess.

On topic: I saved some money while being in the Army in between high school and college years. Just a mere 2500 € and was gone in one and a half years. I actually suffered from starvation sometimes during those years and something else I am really not proud to mention, I flunked and I am still paying off debt Sad

Student loans in the UK are pure win when it comes to paying them back. You only pay when/if you're earning above a certain income and then only a small percentage is taken from your wages. If you don't earn, you don't pay.

Yea, i can order from Play.com or amazon for like half or even one third of the price but still, I mean you should be able to go down to your local vid game store and pickup something without ruining your wallet for the rest of the month..

Have you tried a loan of credit. The interest rate is lower. Like 2.5 or something like that. My Mortgage is done, payed. I am going to be denied for the life insurance part.

Maybe BA don't count. LMAO jk.. But seriously, they paid %40 of my loan for me. I forget the exact name they use. Some of my other friends that had lower incomes had even better percentages. And i didn't even apply for it, just got a letter after i graduated saying that my loans were adjusted by X amount. This was in 2004 when i graduated.

pfft BA ... I have B.Sc. in Health Sciences and M.Sc. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics Wink

Are you talking about loans through alberta or canada (I have some through both)? I actually see in BC if you take a job in the public service for 3 years they pay off your loans completely ... no such program in ontario :/

Oh and pistol, when you have govt issued student loans you get tax credits for the interest portion Smile

Sounds like Norway Norway is actually best for lazy immigrants, you can easily get more money from the government than in an average job.
