Right, so my mate is claiming that FFIX online is the best looking mmorpg ever. I know that i've seen much better looking games (I personally think Age Of Conan and Lord Of The Rings Online are better looking that I can think of right now.)
So can anyone help me find other great looking mmorpgs? Just talking graphics now - nothing else.
cheers!
Edit: Oh since people don't get it..I mean technically advanced/top notch/next generation graphics and so on... I personally don't include cartoonish childrens channel graphics in that *hint hint*
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

Tbh i quite like the simple cartoony graphics of WOW (ive played most mmo's including LOTRO,AOC) but then again i also prefer 2d RPG's (still think suikoden 2 for the ps1 is the best looking RPG ever) over the recent 3D ones.
But just cos you like the simple cartoony graphics it doesnt make it the best looking ( I hate that kind of graphics tbh..too "childish" for my taste).

Exactly it will be a matter of taste for most people as to what their best graphics are, i bet most people think suikoden 2 graphics are shit also.
Conan I would guess has the most advanced currently, LotRO might be close behind from what I saw from the recent trial period.
(Both also support DX10 for a variety of reasons like improved performance and some visual improvements and LotRO is planned to get a DX11 update.)
Aion using CryEngine 1 is also rather nice looking though I don't know how it plays, upcoming MMO's might also be of interest like the Hellgate revival and a variety of CryEngine 2 driven titles.
(Guild Wars 2 also looks rather nice though it does target mid-range systems which shows in the recent images.)
WoW has superior animations (extremely fluid and natural) and artwork to any MMO, imo I really liked the old fairy tale book style graphics, very charming and just "right" for the game..
LOTRO was a bit of disapointment, just like Conan it varies from looking really great to almost amateurish, you can tell they've had like a trillion different designers with different approaches, while with WoW it looks like just one who really knows what he's doing (im sure they have numerous designers too, but they're more professional).
This is your thread so we can ditch WoW if you wish, but I did play since beta but I quit because I hate the game as it currently is.. but will admit to it's superior animations.
That being said, BEST graphics at this point I would pin to EQII. If you have the computer to handle it, it is the Crysis of MMO's. It has scalability but not down to medium machines, you need something at least decent to run it without lagging balls in cities or forests. FFXIV looks like it may run similar.
Eve gets away with looking good due to distance matrixing..imho, I assume by "best graphics" the OP is speaking, highest possible poly count, highest resolution texturing, not that the planet is so far away it just looks gray with some brown streaks, your mind fills in the rest.
All models in Eve look perfect, They might not have the highest poly count, but who wants to fly space eggs? There is no tearing, the AA is great and so is the AF
The planets were updated half a year ago or so.

dont u think that genre "mmorpg" or any of online 3d games cant be driver of progress in graphics! u can find games with not bad graphics, even good, but not perfect, because at first it depends on servers structure and users hardware abilities and at second - because such games are being made for years and are planned to be popular for years! so in my opinion the question is incorrect, try to find compromise...all famous are named, my turn - Forgotten Realms and NwN2!

man eq2 looks like shit.. unless they made some insane improvements in a year.. i doubt that.. last timed i tried i ran worse than everything, and looked worse than wow.. not to mention worst animations i ever saw.. and yes it was on max
In terms of pure visual fidelity - Age of Conan, end of story.
My own screenshots, taken at 1920x1200 all high, DX10 client.

Tera Online is an upcoming 3D fantasy MMORPG. Tera intends to set itself apart with its lack of targeting, giving players full control over each move instead of targeting or hotkeys, emphasizing skills in combat. Additionally, the world will not be instanced, placing all players in the same space. This is also significant since player influence will play a huge role in shaping both Tera's economy and its community.
There are set to be six races, with eight classes to choose from, each locked in an ongoing war to protect his or her kingdom. The game is currently in development and scheduled for a release in 2010. It will be subscription based.
