Anyway, today was a major announcement. Since it's 5 year anniversary of Operation Flashpoint, developers released new Armed Assault press release with video and new screenshots.

I think you must have a been to young when Opf 1 came out. This is Opf 2 , and the great thing about this game is that it's huge and has more realism then Battlefiled 2 or any other.

The great thing is not the realism - it is the level of immersion and the grand feeling of being a small part of something huge as opposed to simply being an individualistic hero who saves the day. It is the only game I know of that has ever gotten the feeling of being in a warzone even close.

Actually no, I played through Operation Flashpoint back in the old days, and it was great, but I don't see what is so special about this yet. However, I might just have to try it before making up my mind about it.
Any word on a release date?

This is NOT Opf2 just a remake of Opf1 with direcx 9 support. New shaders, higher text, new island you name it ..... anyway this game will be the shit can't wai for the release.

OFP is an alltime classic! Nothing can beat the combination of vehicles, ground troops, expansive environment, great AI and built-in editor. This will hopefully live up to its predecessor.
I don't think they have a publisher yet, so I'm skeptical about this releasing this year.

It is too bad those greedy bastards at codemasters really derailed bohemia from making a true successor to the game(the way they sabotaged so many other great gaming franchises). It's great the devs are devoting what resources they have to the game now, but still i am wondering what if... like what if there was a modern ofp with speedtree and a whole new engine with all bells and whistles(like ofp when it first came out)? Now that would be amazing indeed. Anyways it is a shame they dont have more to work with, and this game will not be able to compete graphically with everything else coming out in that timeframe to get the popularity it deserves.

It is a Heavily modified version of the same engine that powered Operation Flashpoint, that is all. The AI will act the same like it did on operation flashpoint.

I first thought it was going to be some "spiritual sequel" to OPF or something. If it's just OPF with a new rendered, it's gonna suck, because the AI and everything else will be really outdated.

- Simulated environmental factors and ambient wildlife
- Latest HDR lighting, normal maps & pixel shaders as well as enhanced aural simulation.
- Story driven single player campaign in an immersive and believable world.
- Intense large-scale multiplayer with 100 and more people online.
- Numerous MP modes with refined and optimised jump-into-play net code.
- Extensive editing and modding capability and community support.

Impossible... Never heard about it and the unreal engine would never be able to handle a game with ofp's scale.

*kills liansk*
if you can do flashpoint level of dynamic detail and vast landscapes with the unreal engine, you're a fucking god and i will personally grant a handjob on the spot
the engines are developed from completely opposite standpoints
unreal engines are designed to take premade poly by poly geometry hand crafted in a piece of software (unrealed, 3dsmax) and load it in memory and draw it
the flashpoint engine is made to take a library of premade patches like a forest of trees, single trees, buildings, roads, etc etc, and scatter them around the gameworld according to a 2D map, and add ground elevations from a heightmap
it's like unreal is like a cast iron sculpture, that is that one set object, with fine detail refinements after the casting process
you can only make it as big as you have room for the cast
and flashpoint like a lego castle, built from zillions of tiny bricks that make up a world of almost unlimited size
