Hey guys, I like fooling around with the midi piano on my notebook and I thought it would be nice if there is a good application out there to record the notes that I enter through my notebook keyboard.

I would like to edit the notes (duration and stuff) afterwards and maybe play it back with a better sound than midi Smile

Further I would like to be able to play with different instruments and arrange the final song. Having different effects and ready drumsets or whatever would be nice but is not a must.

The main important part for me is that I am able to record live my normal PC keyboard inputs as notes that I can edit afterwards Smile

Thanks in advance! (oh and I'm a Windows User, no mac software please )

Never used them before but when I was in a band a lot of people were using Cuebase and Cakewalk.

try reason 4 - http://www.propellerheads.se/

easy to use, lovely (and unique) interface and it does everything you want (and much more)

but using the notebook keyboard as a midi piano? wtf? don't know of any industry standard music software that accepts keystrokes as midi notes, but maybe you could route them through some kind of virtual midi keyboard or something like that. but if you have some money to spare, why not get a small (25keys for starters) midi keyboard like the m-audio oxygen 8 (or the axiom 25 if you also want drum pads). those few bucks won't hurt and it makes the whole process 10 times more intuitive Wink

oh and stay away from cubase/pro tools/cakewalk, that would be complete utter overkill, not even mentioning the learning curve

Ive tried cubase/reason/reacktor over the years..never liked it. over complicated to simple rolls and envelope curves in.
Ive been using FL studio for years and love it.
it supports keyboard as 'keyboard' input..and works GREAT with a midi controller keyboard for input. I got a korg 66 key midi controller..plug it in, it finds it and runs with it as the keyboard too.

and its gotten MUCH better over the years from its baby form of fruity loops. its even to cubase/reason/etc in my eyes for the last year or so (since FL studio 9)
has full input/piano roll editing of patterns, pre and post effects too many to name..and supports VST (most do) but with superior drummer it works great.

I got literally 100's of 100's of VST plguins I can give ya, and 1000's soundfonts for it. there isnt a sound I cant make. using them
I have yet to find anything I cant do in it. and does everything I could possibly ever need it to and more.
I also use it to record guitar input with the guitar rig 3 plugin..basically any pedals and effects you could want in one VST plugin.

I been making music for many years (as a hobby) and its the best I like so far.

it also supports rewire and such if you need it..and is its own rewire output.

edit: plus if ya need help learning what all the buttons/options do I can show you.

exactly, a m-audio fast track is a must for doing it right..real-time ASIO input/output for mic and guitar direct input.

but for a midi keyboard..no need for it..lots of people make USB midi keyboards..my korg is one.

|DXWarlock - I used FL studio a while back now and with the older versions you couldnt drag and drop wav/mp3 files into the time sequencer. For me drum and bass production is predominantly in audio. Just curious if they've changed that with the newer release. Apart from that FL was pretty fun to mess with.

you can now..drag anything anywhere.
like I said since it went to v 8/9 its 10x better. can drag mp3/wav from the list..or from desktop/folder.

I've used Fruity loops years ago.. I don't know maybe version 2 or 3? It was fun to use... I might give the newer version a try! Thanks for the input! Smile If you have any other ideas, keep em coming Smile

If I should go and buy myself a cheap "keyboard" are the buttons analog? So can I just push the button softly to produce a softer sound? I'm not even sure if real pianos work like that Embarassed

yea comparing v2-3 to v9
is like comparing windows 3.11 to windows 7 now..
BIG difference.

yea this is what I have

everything is analog..full touch velocity, every knob/slider can be assigned to anything in FL studio. turn a knob the knob its assigned to moves in the software realtime.

of course i meant usb midi keyboards, besides more or less every decent midi keyboard has usb was well as midi anyway nowadays

and i second the suggestion of getting a decent audio card...you can get the usual gamer pc soundcards down to a useable latency, but forget about input via some shitty integrated laptop chipset

the m-audio fasttrack is my soundcard now...no soundcard in my PC. and its about the same price as a gamers card.

the latency is pretty much none existent. for guitar input thats a big deal..you dont want it playing 1/10th of a second after you pluck..gets you off rhythm

@DXWarlock: my post above came out a bit wrong - i thought as much that you have a fast track card (great choice btw, had the FT ultra myself for a while), but the last part was more of a general statement aimed at pumpaction, since he has a laptop Wink

yea why I suggested the one I have..can hook it to my laptop or any other PC like downstairs in basement, if I want to get loud with music and make it down there.

I am a little bit limited budget wise, so I'll wait to buy some hardware until I have the results of my thesis Smile Oh and I need to see if I am good enough to even go further! But this thread is already bookmarked Very Happy
