Aye, I hate programming exams on paper with passion! The most retarded idea ever!
Algorithm exam on paper I can understand, but programming (like writing "printf" and the like) on paper is retarded!

well id imagine its done that way because too many people abused it and used the computer to cheat.

I'm left handed. I took my Computer Science AP test in the US here. I knew every single problem, but I still failed the exam. Why? We have to take our AP tests with PENS on PAPER here. Since my LEFT HAND SMEARED the PEN on the PAPER, they ruled what I turned in was INELIGIBLE and thus I got FUCKED. Doesn't get stupider than that.

@dingo_d
And the absurd is, these silly grammatical mistakes are not what would cause a program to break or not. Sure it wouldn't compile, but these are things that are corrected within 1 second of compile failure. And instead of looking for the algorithmic correctness and еfficiency, they hang you for silly bullshit...
@tainted4ever
I am left handed also, and it's a problem, but after so many years of studying, haven't you learned how to control it (ie hold your hand high so it doesn't smear the ink)?

Begone devil spawn, begone I say!
Not quite the same, but back in automation class we had to do our grafcet(this) tests and exercises with paper and pen also... which was stupid because the lab had more than enough computers with the software (microwin step7 or something like that)that allowed you to do the same thing but taking 1/2 of the time.
Good times.

Lol.
Programing exams should always be done on paper.
It shows that you know the correct syntax.
I had a programming exam with basic turing and c+ like 7 years ago.
It sucks. 4 page program for something that'll grade everyone in class accordingly based on attendance and marks.
What bullshit was that my prof didn't even proof read the exam. Just checked the programming grammar and gave a perfect mark. It was bull then. Never again took pc engineering again.

We wrote PASCAL programs on paper a long time ago when I took a course. It was supposed to force us to learn to think structurally and analytic which in turn created better sources as opposed to sit in the editor and go with it as you went along.
Personally I'd rather do some initial system development projecting than write even a tiny bit of code on a paper, it sucks, I get cramps in my LEFT hand after 10 minutes and it takes 3 times as long.

well for exams it works in teaching structure.
you wont have to do pen/paper programming after.
and the structure will stick or at least should.

Bah, imho the syntax is the least important of the things you need to know when programming, and you can pick it up easily with the help of any decent IDE and a tutorial ... if it was for me all programming exams would be in pseudocode, that way you could concentrate on what really matters: code structure, decoupling, good class hierarchy, correct recognition and realization of design patterns etc...

I've the same shit here. Miserable bitch forces us to write everything in our notebooks. Well, HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW IT WILL WORK? I can't exactly compile it on paper.

Ehm, well, your job is to write what you think will work, then it's the teachers task to see if you actually understand programming without having various aids like IDE's sorting out the stuff for you.
It's a good strategy actually, it's just a major pain in the butt that adds frustration, extra hard work and patience beyond human capabilities.
If they at least allowed you to write the program in notepad or something where you could cut'n'paste and sort out classes etc. with simple word processor functions, it would help a lot.
