Yes, i am old. Yep, i have been playing Ultima 4 on my PC. I have been lurking since then waiting for *good* Pc games. Been married, got kids, but the industry nevery adapted to games like Ultima 5, 6,7 1+2, Wasteland, Goldbox shit. I mean ppl wanted "bread bake kind of complex ala U7 kinda" complex games, but the industry start to dumb down games to some "left-right-up-down" kind of controller kind of games.
WTF? PPL WANT complex games. With a lot of lil boxes i can push around n stuff. Baking bread even though its useless. What do they give us instead? Stupid left-right-center-back- controls with "UBER GRAPHICS". Someone remember Pool of Radiance? Tactic battles and text story readin. That have been epic.
Did we dumb down being idiots? Or do the game developer thing we have become more stupid? What the fuck happened so we have to play more 3D-Story-Shit instead of games full of contend (Ultima, Arcanum, Planescape:T).
Evolution goes on, but game development seems to go back?

Well, dumbing down the games is done to cater wider audience... it's as simple as that. Business...
There's no going back to the old games, except for some indies.

It's not a gaming industry problem, it's a generation problem. From tv to movies to music, you name it. It's all about sales, and unfortunately we are not the target audience anymore. Sucks, i know, but hey, at least my wallet is happy.

I changed the thread title to better reflect the topic.
I agree with your sentiments, as I have stated many times before on this site.
It's not for nothing I'm in the process of compiling the library that can be seen below.
At the same time I also feel that Ultima IV is a horrible game today. Theres been so many interface improvements since 1985, better stories, better plots, more interesting characters in rpgs.
But back in the day it was a great game, just not today.
The golden age of rpg gaming, and possibly pc gaming in it's entirety, is in my opinion from 91 to 2001.

I enjoyed the witcher a lot.
Anyways, yes, I feel your problem. And the biggest issue is, is how much it takes to make a game now.
I always wanted the complexity of older games, with amazing 3D graphics, and we have yet to see that.

Agreed about Ultima IV, it's a pretty simple and clunky game by today's standards, but boy was it special to a 10yo kid with a C64.
As for the gaming downhill, I blame consoles. Surprise. If they were never invented, we would probably get games that are complex and mentally challenging, with relatively bad graphics and much less of an effort/budget required for developers to make them.
It's curious how when I was a kid, I was always claiming how gaming isn't necessarily a geeky activity for the nerds and how everybody could enjoy it. I hate how right I was and now I want gaming to be a special hobby for a small group of people again.

I think in time game might start to get more complex... i bet all those console freaks are gone get bored or part of them will start to ask for more complex games...
I look at mine sister kid he was 4 and only game he like match is lego star wars which is not just bottom smashing... so there is hope we only need industry and retards deciding to see it!

Nobody is forcing you to even open the topic. I think all the FPS and TPS are getting boring so please never make a thread about one again.
There have been a lot of these threads lately but it's because we're almost at the bottom of how bad things will get in gaming.

Aiii... Idiocracy is a perfect example of where we are heading. We are being dumbed down by features in life because of the urge of free time and comfort. On top of that everything gets way to commercialized. We stop using our own instincts and let machines, compagnies or whatever is available take over.
Because life gets to easy we dont need things that makes our life hard and where we have to think ourselves. We get used to the Easy mode we put ourself in. And a pefect example of this is : Current Games, which brings us directly on topic again

I just do not get it. Crysis was a superb game graphically speaking. But in some games, you have to a lot of micromanagement for achieving goals. So WHAT THE F... ? Why people could not love one of them or both ? 13 years ago, I loved AoE and Fifa 97 and now I love Fallout 3, ME2 and Borderlands. No one forces you to play PC games. If you do not like today games, YOU just go back to DOS games and basta.

There's practically nothing that's original any longer, while quite frankly I'm monumentally bored of gaming. If I spend 90 mins gaming then that's a long session.
Just like education, TV and the media in general, game dumbing down has become a feature of modern society.

Ah stop whining. There are plenty of amazing games today.
Probably the only reason you(and me) don't enjoy games as before, is that we are older. I was always think back on the games I used to play when I was younger, and try to find a game that I will enjoy as I did then. Its just a taste I developed when I was starting to play games. Simply because you grew up playing those games doesn't make everyone else "dumb", or todays games "dumbed down" (what makes any of you so smarter than average man anyway?).
Todays generation has a different taste. They like competitive multiplayer, and they like accessible, cinematic and polished games. You like games with complex game mechanics. It doesn't make one better than the other, or one gamer dumber than the other.

It's all about money now, if you can make a game to sell on all platforms why would you focus on just one. I too miss those pc gems of the past but lets face it a lot of those companys are no longer about, which must be due to financial reasons....

Not everything is lost though, only the AAA games. Look at minecraft for example. (although i'm sure a minecraft 2 derp edition will follow up soon and kill it)
