Found this on: http://www.businessinsider.com/isp-copyright-2011-7

Quote:
Five huge brand-name ISPs are banding together in an effort to slow down and possibly even cut off internet access to people accused of copyright infringement.

After agreeing on a deal almost three years in the making, AT&T, Cablevision Systems, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon announced yesterday morning that they would be monitoring their customers' internet traffic for instances of copyright violation. The effort is called the PROTECT IP Act.

It will operate on a six-strike system. After that, they initiate the wonderfully Orwellian-sounding "mitigation measures," which could include bringing a subscriber's internet speeds to a crawl and redirecting a subscriber’s service to a "educational" page about infringement.

The arrangement has the full backing of the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America, but 90 lawyers have determined it to be unconstitutional. They've written an open letter to Congress along with several other professors and IP experts.

Seems like this should be totally illegal. What right do they have to monitor what people do with their internet?

Is it any more illegal than copyright infringement?
Dunno, just asking.

The next step will be having all the emotionally stimulating material banned and the offended electrocuted. Illegal materials will be destroyed by immediate incineration. All citizens of America are required to take regular injections of the emotion-suppressing drug Prozium.

So this means they might monitor it for something else too? CIA, SC?

We can just imagine what kind of mess it would be if all that logs leak like everything else nowdays.

This isnt just an american problem, France, for example, has the three strikes law. The EU will try (and probably succeed) to push this throughout Europe. Alot of frenchies are using ssl usenet now cuz p2p is just too dangerous. State legislated copyright enforcement is the future and the ISPs cant do a thing about it.

Not going to happen in the EU. Our ISP's here in NL alone already won't go along with it; our parliament is pushing for regulation against deep packet inspection as well, effectively undermining any copyright control through monitoring on the internet.

Land of the free eh? Crappy connections to begin with and now this - ORESUM!

OT: This will never happen in Romania! And even if it will, what will they do, sentence or fine every kid, teenager or young adult with access to the Internet?

Bullshit laws, man, reasons to invade your privacy.

You may not think it'll affect you but as these laws get accepted in other countries it'll have an effect on how quickly stuff gets cracked/released and spread..

Not really, the majority of the countries where most "cracking" is done won't pass bullshit laws like this Smile

And just for the record, the USA is not the source of most cracks anymore (not since Fastlink anyway) and most certainly not where the most uploads come from. Russia obviously has a lot these days (Cool Face), but there's a surprisingly high amount coming from the Netherlands (a lot of uploads come from here or run through primary servers here) and Norway. Sweden and France used to be massive, but they've gone down a lot since they both extradite to the US without hesitation (again, points at Fastlink).

Like I said, this shit won't pass here in NL, nor will it in Norway - Mother Russia simply doesn't care so no worries there either Very Happy

problem is always the same: weapon do not kill people, people only kill people. So, first excuse is: bad pirates, let's ban them all...and finally, the second excuse will be: political opposition is bad ( look at China, huh), you do not vote for me, you do not pay your taxes, you cum in front of your LCD, you are ALL bad, blam, all of you are banned.
