Official web page: Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Publisher: Square Enix Developer:Square Enix 1st Production Department
Genre: RPG
Release date:21-NOV-2013 JP // 11-FEB-2014 US // 13-FEB-2014 AU // 14-FEB-2014 EU
OTHER VIDEOS - removed from the art version since it's useless when unclickable.
Spoiler:
Since someone had the bright idea to implement padding between rows of pictures (and only rows), this looks like shit with blue lines between slices, so the clickable stuff is not clickable and animated stuff is not ani...I took that out out completely.
Oh great, it's also impossible to simply LINK jewtube onto letters, the system ignores it and embeds the video anyway, so they're wrapped into spoiler tags now...

I'm not completely sure how I feel about this yet. FFXIII was.... well, it was bad, lacklustre gameplay and music that did great injustice to the series, but had a very good story. FFXIII-2 tried to fix that but ended up just pissing in the face of fans with the "you must buy the DLC to get the ending.. oh wait... we even give you a cliffhanger in those too, trololol!" rubbish. Now there's a THIRD game coming that radically alters everything once again. Now it's just a single character hack'n'slash with "soshull eluhmentz"? Egh. No doubt SE will charge full price for it - as well as throwing tons of DLC into the mix.
Sorry for the noob question, i have never played any FF game. i have some questions: is XIII and XIII2 are the only games you can play on PS3/360? are there others? and my main question is how is the combat? is it turn based? i saw some reviews on youtube but i see that you can move your character, how the combat works exactly? one more thing.. XIII2 on 360 is only 1 dvd, hows this possible? the first was 3 dvds iirc. is XIII2 even playable on ps3? thanks guys
Yes. XIII and XIII-2 are the only FF games made for the current consoles. There's another FF planed for PS3, I forgot what it's called.
And yes, they're TBS JRPGs, you can't move on the battlefield in XIII and XIII-2, afaik.
There are better JRPGs out there, especially for newcomers to the genre, like: Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, Resonance of Fate, Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odissey, Star Ocean: The Last Hope... that I know of.
1. The 360 has Final Fantasy XI, XIII and XIII-2. The PS3 has XIII, XIII-2 and with XIV coming up -- FF Versus XIII is "coming" apparently, but it's been "coming" for five years now. FFX/X-2/XI/XII are PS2 titles and only the launch PS3 had any half-decent PS2 support.
2. XIII/XIII-2 aren't turn-based but neither are they real-time, they use an evolution of the original "Active Time Battle" and basically means each character has a time bar that fills up, once it's full you can perform commands.
3. You can't move your character in combat, only on what's called the "map" outside of combat. In combat you select commands when your action bar fills up.
4. XIII-2 has more in-engine cutscenes and less prerendered ones, meaning less space is required.
5. Yes, XIII-2 has been hacked for 3.55, so it's fully playable up to 1.04. Patches after that require 3.70 and can't be played yet.

Squaresoft is dead to me
good god XIII-3
now the question is how BIG REALLY WAS XIII ??? when they cut so much that those cut bits now create a third game ???
Quote:
According to art director Isamu Kamikokuryou from Final Fantasy XIII all that cut stuff from the game could likely make a whole new game!
What did gamers lose out on? A full zone around Lighting's home, a secret Nora resistance base and an amusement park Nautiuls with a zoo.
"Apparently, the design team created a full area surrounding Lightning's home. This area resembled a park. There was also a secret base for resistance group Nora inside a shop somewhere. Nautiuls Park, an amusement facility, at one point also included a zoo," reports Andriasang, who translated the piece, likely from Famitsu magazine.
The content was dropped because Square Enix thought the game may have gotten a little too big, and they didn't want to skew the game balance either. Maybe one day fans could get to see these places in the form of some DLC?
a whole new game thats rubbish.... oh wait didn't we later got XIII-2
Quote:
It's been said that enough locations were cut from Final Fantasy XIII to make an entire new game, but according to developer Square Enix it won't be reusing any axed content in upcoming sequel FFXIII-2.
Speaking to Xbox World 360 magazine, Final Fantasy XIII-2 director Yohinori Kitase was asked about the supposed cuts, to which he said he feels the amount of content removed from the original FFXIII has been misinterpreted.
"I think those comments have been really nadly misinterpreted. The fact is that when making any game you need to come up with lots of different ideas and designs that you weigh up against each other before picking the best one. Obviously in that process a lot of ideas and designs have to be discarded," he explained.
He went on to assure fans that the development team has stayed away from this unused material when working on the sequel.
"We have never knowingly picked up these kind of ideas and recycled them. That's not what we do. It's natural for anyone making games to throw away ideas but the scenario of FFXIII-2 is completely newly written and has no connection to anything we didn't use for FFXIII", he added.
as if you would believe them they would trash already done maps , texture , models , levels etc.
Sin317-"im 31 years old and still surprised at how much shit comes out of my ass actually ..."
SteamDRM-"Call of Duty is the symbol of the true perfection in every aspect. Call of Duty games are like Mozart's/Beethoven's symphonies"
deadpoetic-"are you new to the cyberspace?"
Only the first three pictures in my post are direct artwork, the rest are screengrabs for now.
I'm checking Squeenix's European press extranet but they still don't have anything up there for me.
Meh XIII was shit, I didnt even bother with XIII-2 and I sure as hell aint bothering with this.
Talk about millking it.
go back to what works, or fuck off Square.

- This will be Lightning's last game and will end with a happy ending. The game has just one ending.
- The first FFXIII was story driven, meaning that the story pulled the player along. FFXIII-2 was player driven, meaning players selected the story. Lightning Returns is World Driven, meaning players have to consider how they interact with the changing world.
- The game's in-game time works out to one day being the equivalent of one to two hours of real time. There will be increases and decreases in time.
- The game is meant to be played and cleared multiple times. The volume is not such that it will take many tens of hours to clear once.
- People from XIII-2 haven't died. Because of the effects of the chaos (I'm not sure if this is the proper English word), people have stopped aging and don't get old.
- The Novus world has four continents, two natural and two city-type.
- Depending on your actions, the remaining life of the world could decrease, and the game could end before the 13 day limit.
- There are some times when helping someone will decrease the life of the world.
- Defeating some enemies and clearing some quests will increase the life of the world.
- Lightning is all by herself in battle, allowing you to concentrate more than when you had to control a party.
- Lightning has become a considerably more refined person.
- You can freely move around during battle. Some elements of the battle system are timing-based.
- The battle system is close to action. There's an ATB gauge.
- During battle, you don't select menu commands. Instead, you select abilities which have been assigned to buttons.
- Hope will give guidance to Lightning via wireless com.
- The city has clocks everywhere showing the constant progression of time.
----------------------------------
~25h game - about two hours per day, designed with multiple playthroughs in mind and one ending which we already know is a "happy" one and....and...
I think it nearly sounds like a spin-off the way Metal Gear Rising are to Metal Gear Solid. Only one character which the story centers on, more action-toned combat etc. The whole time-things sounds a lot like Zelda - Majoras Mask though....

"The Final Journey of Lightning" Trailer
There's some gameplay in there.
The city looks so empty and plain, overly artificial.
Altair cape + Deus Ex glasses + Mass Effect chestpiece + Bayonetta-like acrobatic skills.
And what's with that Mirror's Edge effect with red interactive parts like ledges and ladders on an otherwise beige city.

Aaaand they finally added some superlowres screens to the PressVault along with the slides with info.

- You can move around between continents by foot or faster by monorail. It’s the so called “open world” connection.
- Judging by the current outlook, the world is really vast and it’s rough on the operations.
- The first thing Square thought of was the map function, but now the numbers are regulated.
- Square looks forward to seeing how each continent is manufactured and connected.
- It seems there is still more to come.
- In this title, one day is 24 hours. In Final Fantasy XIII it was 26 hours, but when time stopped 2 hours were lost.
- What happens when the gate closes due to the time but you’re in a fight with a strong enemy, does it close after the battle? Does time pass during battle?
- If you’re doing your best, you can stretch the time limit past 13 days and increase time, but how you do it is a secret.
- The game’s test players cleared it in 2 to 4 days.
- Depending on how you do it, the deferment is quite different.
- The ending doesn’t differ too much depending on the time it takes you, but there are a lot of things in the playthrough you can’t experience within the time limit. Those variations are what players can look forward to.
- Battles are invoked when a corresponding button is pressed. Battles this way have you watch the ATB bar.
- There are a limited number of items you can carry.
- By setting abilities, the battles are more action based rather than command based.
Details taken from Gematsu
-----------------------------------------------
And some more from Gematsu. Both from Famitsu mag.
- Lightning’s new costume is designed by Tetsuya Nomura.
- You’ll be able to change Lightning’s costume and costume color during the game.
- Time is always flowing, except for when your menu is open on the field.
- Every NPC’s whereabouts and actions will constantly change.
- Certain information can only be obtained at specific times.
- Lightning is the only playable character.
- Lightning uses “Styles” in battle. Each Style consists of a certain weapon, shield, accessories, and abilities.
- You can customize Lightning’s appearance and ability considerably.
- By defeating monsters, Lightning can earn points to increase her available time, and items to strengthen her equipment.
- The battle system name has not yet been determined. Right now, they’re calling it the “Amazing ATB” battle system. Rest assured, it’s tentative.
- Though you’re only controlling one character, it feels as if you’re fighting with multiple, according to the mag.
- Monsters appear even in the city.
- Black haze will appear in specific areas at certain times. The new area will become monster territory.
- Half of the game’s monsters are new.
- The game’s conclusion can be experienced straight from the package. (No download content will need to be purchased, unlike Final Fantasy XIII-2.)
- Kitase guarantees you’ll be satisfied by the outcome of previous games’ characters’ stories.
- Two costumes for Lightning are revealed - “Dark Muse" and "Alone in the Dust"
Known in the game as “Wear” Lightning can equip up to three at once and change between them in real time during battles. Each outfit has its own ATB gauge that fills as you continue to fight.
- Screenshots in superlowres. Sorry about that, this is how it's on the pressvault for online...I don't have the print ones yet and I didn't see any other website with em right now.
Extended trailer from last month
Still nothing new-new here worthy of any hype.
