The question came to my mind, what gaming really is, or what it is to me. I thought about this, as I looked through the motion controller videos of this year's E3, and realized, those are most definitely NOT games.

So gaming can mean a lot of things, all of them have to do with abstraction and playing a role. I'm going to take PC games here mostly, as I think that's the most capable platform. Games for me are a thought exercise, that I input to the imaginary world through an interface, which is good only, if my will transports in the game world with as little energy as possible, and highest fidelity possible. In other words, the ideal PC game would be one controlled by my thoughts, at the speed of my thoughts, and the aim would be something that challenges me to think and react better than my foe. Also, I think the best PC games ever are competitive multiplayer ones. Ofc, I love a good narrative as anyone else, but if I want the best of narrative, I go read a book, because nothing beats that one yet.

Anyway, to clear it down a bit.

The type of game, ideally, should be something we as people could never do before gaming came along. Like shooting off heads. The vast majority of us could never in life before gaming find himself in a q3 type deathmatch arena. Pretty simple. Gaming expands our life, but is inspired by it, but it must expand it. At the same time, gaming is a battleground of brain power, this is something inherited from the real world, but executed in such a manner as no board game could ever do it, and in real time. No need for dungeon masters. All in all, the content of a good PC game is something, that you wouldn't find anywhere in the physical world (you know what I mean), but something that still challenges your thoughts and reactions.

If we go with my definition (which I know is rough around the edges, but you know what I mean), it's clear, very clear, that the superior input method for games right now is the mouse and keyboard. Why? Because I barely have to move to input my will. I need minimal energy, and can input a whole lot of information all at once (something I will call input bandwidth). Nothing comes even close to m&k, until we can aim with our eyes, and move with our thoughts. Imagine FPS instagib sessions there Very Happy. The best interface with time, will be no interface, like the matrix. It's clear, that's the way we want to be going, because it is efficient.

So to the point of my thread. Are we going that way now? Kinect?

I don't think so. Two reasons:

The goal of the game does not expand reality, it mimics it in an inferior fashion: think kinectimals. Completely useless. Buy an effing dog, and you might learn some responsibility aside from being licked in the face ... virtually even.

Second, the input method is going backwards in time. Using kinect for facebook. Are we serious here? Mouse is simply unbeaten. I use my medium DPI mouse (razer copperhead) on high sensitivity with deadly accuracy. If I would try and click buttons with my whole hand (add the lag kinect has as well) compared to the mouse, I simply wonder, why the fuck come up with this? Does this drive technology? NO, it limits the goal of the game... ah, so here we come full circle.

With shitty input, the game's essence becomes compromised because of the low input bandwidth - can't have too many things going on too fast, otherwise you can't control it, because you can't give enough commands to keep up the pace. There we go. Vicious circle indeed.

Microsoft, be prepared for a lot of migration off Windows.

my definition of a game is simple;
an artificial system made to stimulate an adrenaline rush (action games) and/or intellectual sense of accomplishment (puzzles)
at best they mesh together into tactical games like flashpoint or thief, but i won't discriminate on either end of the spectrum
a game to me is not by necessity narrative
a narrative is welcome as long as it doesn't step on the above
the modern gaming industry has completely lost touch with what games are and shit like the kinect games shown are a further sign of that

challange to beat a game (these days more and more easy :/ ) and the fun to play with friends, listening to them over skype in a rushed L4D VS game is priceless Smile

ahh, and the experience to do some sort of things... differs each game of course

Apart from FM2010 which I play online with buddies from time to time, games don't hold much of a special place for me. It's a fun distraction, nothing more. I'd much rather read a good book.
I never felt like I was a playing role while gaming , I guess my mind doesn't work that way. That's why I hate 'drama' in games, it's all artificial bs for me. Only PS:T came close to drawing me in fully. While it was technically inferior, I felt like I was reading an excellent book. Good times.

to the OP
Metroid on wii, to give you an idea (and soon golden eye..)

assurely mouse+keyboard is superior atm, but the Move *could* be more precise then wii. And gameplay vid from a PS3 should start to acheive the speed and skill seen on a PC FPS rather the the slowpokes we see today using theirs thumbs to strafe and aim.

the question is tho, wheter you want the most immersive way of playing (consoles are trying to get there) or you want the most efficient.

Sadly, the part in bold made your post lose all credibility in my eyes. I thoroughly despise motion control as much as anyone, and even though the Wii has several games I'd really enjoy (Dragon Quest, etc.), I'd rather stab myself in the eye than ever buy a Wii. Nonetheless, if something as completely pointless as tic-tac-toe (a game that should invariably result in a draw) can be called a game for centuries, I don't think that you can so simply call "not a game" on the horrible shit we get shoveled down our throats by the industry.

Not a fun game, sure. Totally worthless, at least that's subjective. Not a game? Never.

Completely subjective, but you are, of course, free to feel this way.

For me, gaming is anything that I find enjoyable. At times it's a dozen scrims with my Counter-Strike buddies, and at others it's a quick romp throughout the relatively easy world of Oblivion. It just depends on my mood.

Reading, film, television, theater and games are all common modern ways of experiencing narrative fiction. In the past we often listened to the radio or a tale spun by a traveling entertainer. There are pros and cons to each of these. For example, some claim that the The Godfather and Star Wars are too controlling an experience -- everyone sees and thinks exactly what the artist wants you to see and think -- while many other call those films masterworks for exactly those reasons. Essentially, you could never achieve those goals through the written word, just like you can never achieve the goals choices/exploration in a film.

Basically, you probably shouldn't talk about what the best form of narrative is without fully understanding the different aspects of the various mediums. Then again, you might just be pimping your multiplayer-only game that you're working on.
Anyway, to clear it down a bit.

I could go on about this, but I don't really think you'll listen anyway.

Gaming for me is an experience , visiting incredible wordls , living incredible situations , meeting unique characters , immersing myself into a whole new world , and just witnessing the incredibile artistic creativity of the human mind .

Recently i started looking up Half-Life 2's concept art , and it's simply amazing , the whole concept around City 17 , everything , it's whole look was just mesmering for me , it featured a grim and torn up world , i dunno why , but that it's really appealing to me . A mechanized world like that just fascinates me.
Anyway , while movies will only show us something "else" and books will leave it up to our
imagination , games will actually give us the chance the live it .

I could summ it up as saying that if the game is immersive , than the experience is ineffable , but it probably isnt since my dumb ass has been stuck to exact science for the last 3 years and i've lost all the creativity in expression i had in highschool.

PS

Exploration is what i find the most fun, so i can't stand linear games at all. Graphics is another thing i'm very interested in since i do 3D modelling, textures etc, it's always inspiring to see good gfx and art design.

I play less and less every year (i'm 38 ). I think i've bought at least 7 games that latest 6 months, haven't finished or even played a single one (i've tested all of them, though). It's turning into collecting more than gaming Very Happy 3D modelling is also a lot more fun than gaming Wink So much fun to really use your brain, cordination and creativity.

but seriously, gaming for me is about fun and enjoyment... sounds dumb and obvious, but thats why i game. you can tell me a game has the most complex and awsumist story evarr, or has a great voice cast, or great physics, graphics, texturing, is a pc exclusive, took 50 years to develop, and is the greatest technical achievement ever, and cures cancer in between loading levels, i dont care... if im not having fun, i wont play it....

even if the game has a dumb story or poor graphics, as long as its fun, im happy and enjoying it.. thats why when people say how shitty mw2's story was or how fucking shit it was for not having dedi' servers, for what i wanted it for... the gameplay... twas fun, and thats why i game... to have fun.

Scratch that. What I meant to say was; "dead" Gaming is dead to me.

*goes back to playing classics. You know, the games that WERE magnificent but get trolled on every day by derp console twats who maintain that older 90s games were shit and that we're seeing them through rose-tinted glasses*
