This could be many things. If I were you I would start by getting a decent firewall, so you can monitor all your conections in detail. Then I would get a task menager replacement, and monitor your cpu usage closely, find out if any app is for any reason chewing up your CPU. Try TaskInfo, Ive been using it for quite a while and its great, with ton of detailed info on each app and process running.

I currently use Sygate Firewall...
And just scanned my pc with Avast... 3 viras just removed...
