I often repair friends' PCs and sometimes I'm stuck while searching for drivers etc. Which is a good straight-forward program for listing the exact onboard chipsets and cards found ? (Even if they're not recognized by Windows of course !)
I'm especially having problems identifying the correct onboard Realtek NIC chipset used. I'm getting a "Network controller not found, make sure it's not set in Deep Sleep ... blah blah" on a MSI K9AGM2 motherboard. So I can't get it to connect to the net and it makes testing a pain in the ass.

When dealing with onboard stuff I usually go to the motherboard makers homepage and checks out the specs for the motherboard as well as which downloads are available for the board (not necessarily downloading, just for identification purposes). If that fails you can get the hardware ID from Device Manager - Details - Hardware Ids and look/google for that. I used to know a page with a comprehensive list of all known hardware id's but I've lost it.

Yes thats smart but mainboard makers are usually located in asia and it a long trip to go there because he cant use the net WITHOUT A WORKING NIC... but what dingo_d said, everest is great and often has direct links to drivers.

Actually I got to the manufacturer's website (MSI) and found 2 mobos with the same serial, tried their drivers and no deal. Fortunately my friend found his CD !! Those drivers worked fine.
I'll keep Everest in mind, but isn't that version old ?

You will actually be surprised how efficient Windows Update (for Vista and 7) is at finding drivers for rare hardware. Give it a chance, it might surprise you.

I was making a statement in general. The "Do you want to connect to the internet to install modem drivers?" problem has been known for ages.

Good idea, I'd forgotten about that. Got to find its drivers and keep them on a usb stick, too, I guess.
