Ok so I am about to install Chronicles Of Riddick,
and the game requires SP1 (or 2) to be installed .
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's a 'première'
in PC games world, in a way that's as bothering as
Valve activation w/ HL² : somehow you need Internet
access in order to download SP2 without which you
can't play the damn game.
So I wondered if more and more games would require
Service Packs from now on :
I thought they were mostly security and maybe memory
fixes, nothing to do with game performance.
Latest big titles like D3 or HL² don't need those,
so why the hell does Riddick need it ??
PS : maybe wrong section, sorry :/

You dont need Service Pack 2 to play....its the other way around, some games are fucked up with SP2 aslong as mp3's and other thing... depends of your system. I deleted SP2 after 15 minutes of use.

Well those who still use XP without at least SP1 are crazy 'cause the original XP is way too buggy (I was unable to burn correctly without SP1).
Not only games, but more and more softs require (or at least recommend) to use at least SP1...
Steam is bothering right, but to have SP1 no, I don't agree. You can find it in many magazines or at least, you can ask a friend to burn it for you...

SP2 gives a lot of problems when installed right on top clean xp or xp sp1. When installed from a slipstreamed disc with xp sp2 + additional updates it will work flawlessly. You will also save a lot of space. And no It's not only security and bug fixes. They've also touched lot of critical parts too.
Unfortunately most retail users don't have the option of getting or the knowledge to get or do a slipstreamed xp+sp2 disc so YES sp2 is a BIG disaster. Even if there are not so many flaws there shouldn't be any as they've pushed it back so many times.
