Hey all,

I rarely post in here but do appreciate peoples different opinions on stuff....So my question is what router should I buy and is more suited for gaming, eather on PC or with my PS3. My girlfriend also requires a model which includes G- since its a 4-5 year old laptop.

I was aiming at the Dlink DGL-4500 but Im still not sure. I would really appreciate tips from you guys. My budget price range is around 160-170$.

Thanks in advance. Laughing

Oh yeah!! I also need a model that can stream HD content, especially 1080P movies over wireless if possible.

Thanks

One of the most popular routers I see in everyones house is the WRT54G

Stable as a rock and can take 3rd party firmwares. I've had mine for 5 years now. It reboots maybe once a week or something but meh.

This question was asked not too long ago.

For starters, don't buy into the "gaming router" bullshit. That already cuts the money you need in half pretty much, which you can then spend on a router that actually performs well. Last, read reviews to find out if a router does well or not.

I have a Belkin N+, widely regarded as one of the best performing routers out there. In the attic, about 15m away from the router, my laptop still gets about 70-80 mbit on the wireless (so that's through 2 floors as well). Wired transfers from my PC up here to another one downstairs run at about 800-900, and that's through probably about 20-25 meters of cat5e cable in total.

Like I said though, read reviews, and don't buy into this "gaming router" or "gaming network card" bullshit because you'll be overpaying (my Belkin should set you back about 70-80 $) :E

Tomato firmware is old. Go with any router that supports DD-WRT. I have a WRT54G in bridge mode running DD-WRT. I also have a Netgear WNR834B N Router running DD-WRT. I never use N mode as its a complete waste. I run both routers in G mode, never have to reboot them, ever. Rock solid. I suggest find a cheap router (G) is fine that runs DD-WRT. Ciscso does not make the WRT54G anymore, they replaced it with some junk model.

Thank you all for your suggestions...As time was pressing me...I went and bought the Dlink DIR-825...as nobody had awnsered here prior to my purchase.

After a week of use, I have to say that I am not deceived with it. Rock solid so far, no reboots needed, easy to configure and can handle greatly my bandwith (30 mb/s) with no problems whatsoever. Even my pS3 wired in gigabyte (1000) handles it no sweat.

And my GF is very happy that she can use her 5 year old laptop on -G 2,4 ghz wirelessy with no problems eather.

So far I recommand it to everyone. A bit overpriced I have to agree...140$ Canadian price but worth it IMO.

Heavily overpriced, and doesn't do the job better than some other routers, but it's your choice right Wink
