How to record a guitar plugged to a PC without delay ? My friend has a delay problem (using onboard sound chip), wants to know the cheapest solution.

So, are you sure there is no way to eliminate the lag of the onboard chip ?

Spending money makes me sad sometimes.

the lag is simply caused by the shitty onboard chip. you could try decreasing the latency, but that's gonna hurt the quality considerably. "considerably" as in "sounds like crap" Wink

how ?

the fucking guitar rig, fasttrack pro etc are too expensive, what's the cheapest card for simple no latency input ? Some cheap gamer card that can do the job ?

usually you can set the latency in the software...which one is he using, anyway?

as for cheapest solutions...well, the cheapest "pro" audio card would be the m-audio delta 2496, but a x-fi should do the job as well. if you want to go ultra cheap, get an audigy with modded ASIO drivers

Guitar rig 4 + ASIO sound driver. Certain amount of delay exist because of decoding. I have it set up like this:

And I can't hear a delay (I can't notice it). Funny thing tho, when I had GR on win XP I could notice that 'high' delay :\

EDIT: oh and I have my guitar plugged in my line in grinhurt So no special sound card and it works fine Very Happy

you will always have delay even with ASIO software emulation drivers..not much..but you will.
ive tried everything under the sun with onboard and soundcards..unless its an actual ASIO soundcard, you will have some delay.

maybe not noticeable at slow speed, but it enough to screw up your timing while playing.

fasttrack i got was only like 50 bucks..and its about as close as realtime. I cant tell the difference between an actual amp, and the fastrack for delay.

plus the audio quality is 10x better with a proper guitar in..i thought the linein on my card sounded ok until I got the fastrack...now it sounds like crap when I hear it.

this is the one I have
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00061ZM2Y/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A21Z5WJQSGVB69

seems the price went up.

but i LOVE it.it is my soundcard.
I have no other soundcard in my machine anymore.

USB from PC to it, RCA out of it into stereo.
guitar plugged into the back of it.

it works with all audio software, without needing ASIO software (hardware emulators), and sounds amazing in guitar rig for guitar (both guitar rig stand alone and inside of FL studio)[/img]

I've got the Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum and plug my guitar into the front panel. With ASIO2-drivers I get latency as low as 5-7ms which is basically unnoticeable.

He can forget good latencies with a shitty onboard sound chip. Alternatively you could get something like Fasttrack, but seriously, a proper sound card with a panel or external part is a must for any useful stuff when it comes to recording audio.

And Guitarrig absolutely rocks, it's mind-boggling really.

ASIO drivers aren't "hardware emulators" (unless you mean ASIO4All), they're special drivers for low latency audio hardware usage.

yea I love guitar rig3...its amazing.

but I agree with frant..for no latency..and good sound quality. (you can have one or the other with cheap cards..not both)
your going to need either a fasttrack (around 80 bucks for cheapest) or a good soundcard thats has ASIO built in and a drivebay front panel.(around 80 bucks for cheapest).

as for guitar rig, and the other software...im sure you know where to look to find it at the 100% off discount Very Happy

well thats what I mean, for his setup ASIO4ALLl is his only option..I tried that..was disappointed with it..why I dropped the money on the fasttrack.
so its emulation of it..no true hardware support for it.

mistyping of words..meant ASIO software, not drivers themselves..any of the software that gives you ASIO fuctions when your hardware doesn't support it.

think of it as the old videogames of long ago, VGAcafe, that did software rendering for people that didnt have videocards..sure it worked..and made it looks 3d..but was UGLY without the correct hardware support for hardware rendering.

I've actually got a Steinberg MI-4 USB Audio Interface specifically for plugging in instruments. I haven't used it since I bought it without knowing there were no 64-bit drivers. Just checked and there are 64-bit drivers available for it now. Not sure what I'm going to do with it since I'm perfectly happy with my X-Fi Platinum.
