Look into the nVIDIA ION netbooks. With hardware acceleration support, playing 1080p is very easy. Otherwise, playing 1080p on laptop means a strong CPU, which in turn means no way 6 hours of battery.

problem is I don't think there is a single one that comes with an optical drive.
I have hundreds of movies (720p) on dvdrs, and would prefer to be able to just pop a few discs into the bag when I have to go away for work and not worry about copying them first or bringing external storage (which obviously wouldn't happen). I guess I would be willing to sacrifice 1080p for only being able to handle 720p.
I'm trying to find a balance between something really portable I can use for work, but at the same time I can use it as a HTPC at home (and get rid of the POS WDTV I have)...

The problem with netbooks is their limited size. They are already cramped very tight, and there just isn't place for an optical drive. What you should look into some cheap external DVD drive which plugs in USB.

Right, gave it a quick go. I didn't bother transferring a 1080p to its hard drive (and I don't burn them), but playback of a 720p MKV is fine over wireless-N. Bit choppy on startup, but after a few seconds it settled in, probably the buffering over the wireless. Nothing special installed on it, although I haven't installed MPC-HC for fuck knows what reason, so I had to use VLC. Other than that not much is installed on it, AC3Filter/CoreAVC/splitter is all I think.
I'm not sure about the slightly higher specced ones, maybe some of them have a proper Core 2 Duo, that should be enough to handle 1080p. I know there's an X350 as well, and X400/410 - they might've added some by now though, just see which ones are available in your region (specs differ per region)
Don't pin yourself on the optical drive, just get an external one; only very few of these slim notebooks have one, and that's mostly 15" ones as far as I know. Or do what I'm doing: use SD cards. Built-in cardreader and my car radio also has an SD slot, so I'm just using SD-HC cards for everything lately
On the actual X-Slim btw: I absolutely love mine, the screen is fucking incredible, and I honestly don't want a bulky laptop like the Thinkpad I had before anymore, even though that was probably my best purchase ever (lasted for 5+ years until the screen broke; shame, because the rest still works flawless ).

Yeah... On a "solo" core without hardware acceleration, you won't be able to play properly even some 720p releases, especially the good ones (not scene DVD5 shit) - I can give examples for high bitrate releases which people had problems on single-core machines - Generation Kill, Battlestar Galactica. These are TV shows, so with movies it can be even worse.
I stream 720p with no problems over my G wireless. 1080p is technically also possible, theoretically, because when I copy the file from my main PC to the laptop, they file copies much faster than actual video runtime. But 1080p have much higher peaks, so that is to be expected.

The laptop does look great for that prices, but make sure to check if all the problems with Intel GMA 4500MHD have been fixed. I remember people had plenty of problems enabling DXVA at all, processing issues, etc.

Asus EeePC 1201N
---
Dual Core Atom (2x1666)
2GB RAM (up to 8GB)
12.1" Display (1366x768
NVidia ION
VGA & HDMI Output
LAN (100mbit) and Wireless LAN (300 MBit/s, IEEE 802.11b/g/n)
VGA Webcam
Windows 7 Home Premium! (no starter edition!)
~600 Canadian Dollar / 450 Euro
Or wait for the EeePC 1215N with ION 2 & Optimus Technology which automatically switches between the integrated Intel GMA and the new ION 2 (rumors say up to 512MB dedicated VRAM).
--
But even the 1201N shouldn't have any problems to play 720p on it's own display and up to 1080p via HDMI.

OK. So I'm down to 2 choices. They are essentially the same thing on the inside, except one is 11.6" and the other is 13.3" and the outsides are built out of different materials (One thing that is really different between the two is that the 13.3" has a silver brushed aluminum case, vs. black plastic on the 11.6").
Acer Aspire Timeline AS3810TZ-4806 NoteBook Intel Pentium SU4100(1.30GHz) 13.3" Wide XGA 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 320GB HDD 5400rpm Intel GMA 4500MHD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115741&cm_re=timeline_13.3-_-34-115-741-_-Product
vs.
Acer Aspire 1810TZ-4093 Intel SU4100 4GB 320GB 11.6IN HD Intel GMA 4500MHD Windows 7 Home Premium Netbook Black
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=45415&vpn=LX.PJ502.105&manufacture=Acer
so, I really wanted something pretty small, which is why I was looking at a high-powered netbook. So, I can't decide if the 13.3" is going to be too big for what I want it for ... being able to stick in a sleeve type case into a shoulder bag without being too bulky is essentially what I'm worried about (so I can bring it along with phone/discs/book etc on a carryon bag).. but also I'll likely be moving it between my den and using it as a HTPC in my bedroom probably a few times a week (so also, bigger takes up more room on my desk and dresser where it sits).
the 13.3" is $50 more when shipping, nearly par $ conversion and not having to pay any tax shipping it from either California to Florida (new egg) or BC to Toronto (ncix, but because they pay a harmonized federal/provincial sales tax in that province I don't have to pay anything in tax).
anyone have any clear preference for something 11.6" in size vs. 13.3" and some reasons why? I want to actually use the screen (say on a plane or in a hotel room) so is the 11.6" too small?

11.6 is definitely too small for my liking. My X340 is 13 as well, and even that gets quite small when simply browsing.
As far as the carrying around goes: 13.6 is perfectly doable, you'll be surprised at how small it really is. My previous laptop (Thinkpad T42) was 15.something inches, and that was perfect to carry around in a backpack. My X340 I carry around in a shoulder bag now, although I don't use a sleeve for it
I say: Go for the 13.3; you'll be glad to have the extra screen space, and it's still really small!

I am not sure how to advice. I've read a lot of bad stuff about the GMA's DXVA, up to a point that it doesn't work at all sometimes. I just don't know what to say, because I never payed much attention. I would still recommend to get the ION, but if it is not possible, make sure to research how reliable the GMA is for 1080p playback.

Screw you north americans
Nice choice mate!
Glossy screen is indeed a bit annoying at times, I definitely prefer the matte screen I had on my T42. On the other hand, colours look amazing on these things, so it's a tradeoff really
