|
 |
http://geizhals.at/a513540.html
| Quote: | The Core i7 980X has six cores running at 3.33GHz with a Turbo speed of 3.6GHz in single threaded apps, although being an EE edition processor you get unlocked cores for life. The core is architecturally a 32nm shrink of the Nehalem, only with two additional cores and two QPI 6.4Gbps paths instead of one. The processor also has the Nehalem-like 256KB of L2 cache per core, plus 12MB of shared L3 cache, which should add up to make this one extremely powerful number crunching machine. Power-wise it is a hog, drawing 130W, which many of you might consider excessive for a 32nm processor. Truth is, however, that's no more than most of its EE predecessors.
Now, before you run out and withdraw your life savings to buy one, consider the following. Despite the 50 per cent more processing power, 12 logical threads and oodles of bragging rights, this CPU scrapes the bottom of the barrel in terms of "bang-for-your-buck". Case in point, early benchmarks show the Core i7 980X performing only as well as a Core 2 Duo E8400 in most games. Simply put, there's really nothing much to be gained from this sort of processor if you're a gamer. |

There's a review of it here as well.
http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i7-980x-review/
Basically the somewhat lowered default RAM speed (1066 instead of 1333) lowers performance a bit and if not overclocked it's not that much faster than the previous 970 models in actual comparisons aside from synthetic benchmarks and similar.
Also cheaper "i" models can clock quite well and for titles that aren't scaling well over several cores this is more important and the additional two cores and hyper threading stuff thus that only helps for really CPU demanding applications and only a few actual games would benefit from it compared to standard i7's or even i5's as I see it.
Not really something for a "gamer" but has other uses I guess, and it is quite fast as such but the price doesn't really make it a viable choice for most people though.
(A 960 or something clocked a bit would be better, 920 as well with decent cooling solution I guess.)

The cheaper i7s also have hyperthreading. But I don't see a six-core CPU coming to the 1156 platform because of the limited bandwidth available, so yeah, anyone with encoding or makeshift servers will probably jump on this, even though in 6 months there will probably be cheaper 6-core CPUs which will overclock to reach almost as good performance.

Lolzoror, the more the cores, the more the fail.

Actually, if you are running a proper server, you'd be running it with dual Xeon W5590 in SMP, so this isn't much good for that either.

It's all flagship PR to steal the thunder from AMD's 6-core server chips.

Yep, but the AMD 6-core will be a lot cheaper than this. This is only for the cash throwers really, like all of the EE CPUs from Intel. :\

That is one W5590.
Now read what you quoted.
And when the 6-core equivalent Xeon arrives, it will smoke this one as well.

Isn't a Xenon 6 core planned for release soon as well? and then the octo-core ( 8 ) CPU i7 or what it'll be called (This was originally called i9 I think.) sometime early 2011?
Moving quite fast now but so is GPU development apparently.
(ATI refresh mid 2010 apparently with the 6000 series out Autumn or Winter based on rumors, NVIDIA will probably have a 485 or similar comeback as well although I have no idea how the normal Fermi is doing at the moment, third revision and should be released in limited quantities towards the end of March apparently as the 470 and 480 variants.)

It's Xeon, not Xenon
6000K Xenon headlights look great though!
ATI's refresh will be 5890 or something along those lines, not a HD6xxx
Fermi's refresh will probably follow not long after that, despite the massive delay on the initial Fermi. Release date is the 26th for the record, so that's more than just towards the end of the month, it IS the end of the month

much cheaper motherboards though and no need for triple channel memory which in relaity offers bugger all anyway unless you like epeen jizzing over synthetic benchmarks

Well, even if that is the case, someone who needs so many cores (and doesn't want to pay crazy amount of cash; €999... !!!) will probably see nice performance boost in his needs, probably up there with the i7 CPUs. May not be the case for gaming or single-threaded applications, but who needs six cores for that?

if they click as much as the other phenoms then they should be fairly fast
